The GLOBE Program Office (GPO) is pleased to announce five winning U.S. teams to attend the GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE) in Cape Town, South Africa. These school teams will meet with scientists and students from around the world to present oral and poster presentations on research related to the 2008 GLE theme, GLOBE Research for Sustainable Communities.  >>

From 8-21 March, students, teachers, and families from more than 60 countries participated in GLOBE at Night, a global campaign to observe and record the magnitude of visible stars as a means of measuring light pollution around the world. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of this annual event by creating community events and to all our GLOBE students who reported GLOBE data. During the March 2007 event, 8,491 observations were reported, almost double the number of observations sent to us in 2006!  >>

On 20 April 2007, over 600 5th - 12th grade students and teachers gathered from 21 Ohio schools to present and showcase their GLOBE research projects at the first annual OhioView SATELLITES Geospatial Technology Conference at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland, Ohio. OhioView, a grassroots organization founded in 1996, promotes the low-cost distribution of U.S. Government satellite data for public use.  >>

The GLOBE Africa Regional Meeting was held 23—27 April 2007 in Riversdale, South Africa. The meeting provided an opportunity for GLOBE Country Coordinators, scientists, government officials and GLOBE Alumni to come together to promote program integration and strengthen relations throughout the region. Representatives from GLOBE countries Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda presented country status reports, discussed challenges, and developed strategies to improve and expand national and regional implementation.  >>

GLOBE students at Felten Middle School in Hays, Kansas have been learning a lot about GLOBE's hands-on activities and international collaboration in space science. They have been focusing on CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared pathfinder Satellite Observation), a satellite launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, CA on 28 April 2006, a joint effort of NASA in the U.S. and CNES (the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) in France.  >>

The Fourth Meeting of GLOBE Coordinators of Latin American and the Caribbean took place on 2-3 February 2007, in Panama City, Panama. Country Coordinators and representatives attended from Argentina, the Bahamas, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay. Representatives from Brazil also participated.  >>

On 8 May 2007, in Malé, Maldives, United States Ambassador to the Maldives Mr. Richard Blake and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Mr. Richard Boucher, along with Mr. Ahmed Abdulla, Minister of Environment, Energy and Water, and Ms. Zahiya Zareer, Minister of Education, and the Deputy Ministers of both programs, held an official celebration to recognize the Maldives' implementation of the GLOBE Program. The Maldives became the 105th country to adopt the GLOBE program on 8 December 2003, when Mr. Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, former Maldivian Deputy Minister for Home Affairs and Environment, and Mr. Jeffrey Lunstead, former U.S. Ambassador for Maldives and Sri Lanka, signed the GLOBE Agreement.  >>

GLOBE Bangladesh celebrated Earth Day 2007 with an art competition. Paintings from 150 Students between the ages of 10 and 15 answered the question "What is important to me about our environment?"  >>

In Redding, California, GLOBE students are learning about science in innovative ways, while expanding their knowledge and awareness of the world. At Evergreen Charter School, GLOBE science has been integrated into all aspects of the curriculum: art, music, language arts, and science. Terri Lhuillier, a GLOBE-certified fifth grade teacher, has been implementing GLOBE protocols for two years, creating new ways to engage her students across the curriculum, through science.  >>

A group of 4th grade students from the Escuela Primaria "República de la India" in Montevideo, Uruguay worked with the GLOBE at Night activities from 5 - 21 March 2007. These 50 students, from 9 to 11 years old, worked together with their teachers Ms. Nelly Chocho and Ms. Patricia Píriz, to investigate the amount of light contamination in their neighborhood.  >>
