Earth Science Week 9-15 October
09/30/2011 12 MDT - Earth Science Week is coming right up. Since October 1998, the American Geological Institute (AGI) has organized Earth Science Week a national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth. U.S. Environment Protection Agency Grants for Environmental Education
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the availability of $1.5 million in grant funding for the Environmental Education Sub-grants Program for 2011. The purpose of this competitive grant program is to increase environmental awareness and stewardship.

Students Conduct Research Near Santa Barbara Channel Islands
Twenty-eight high school students from seven countries in the Near East-North Africa (NENA) GLOBE region and 12 locations in North America participated in the second Ocean for Life field study from 14 - 26 July 2011, aimed at increasing cultural understanding through ocean science.

Earth Science Week Web Event with NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Waleed Abdalati: 12 October
In honor of Earth Science Week 2011, NASA will host a web event with Dr. Waleed Abdalati, NASA's Chief Scientist. Dr. Abdalati will share his stories and perspectives on our ever-changing Earth. Participants will be able to email questions during the webcast, and will be able to interact with the guests live on NASA's Digital Learning Network's DLiNfo Channel.

Earth Science Week is expanding eligibility for its annual photography contest to allow members of The American Geological Institute (AGI) International Affiliates to participate for the first time. Previously open only to residents of the United States, the photo contest has always been a major part of Earth Science Week, which this year is being celebrated October 9-15

Join the October Climate and Land Cover Project!
It's time for another Intensive Observing Period of land cover! Scientists need your help collecting land cover data during the month of October. Participation is simple – conduct the GLOBE Land Cover Sample Site Protocol including MUC code and photographs of the site and enter your data into the GLOBE database. That's it! Collect and enter data anytime during 1 - 31 October.

GLOBE Xpedition - Returning to the Roof of Africa
From 22 September to 1 October 2011, GLOBE students are invited to become virtual, online participants in the third Xpedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro. For the third time, a GLOBE Africa research expedition comprised of GLOBE students, alumni and scientists will scale the largest mountain on the African continent. Their purpose is to conduct experiments, document the shifting biomes and shrinking glaciers, and share this remarkable experience online with those who want to travel and learn along with them
