Dear Friends, near and far away!

In Malta and Gozo, one can find a number of fig-tree varieties.

Here you can find a tentative list of such varities in Malta and Gozo around the 1920's.  Many of these varieties are still being cultivated in Our Islands.

  • The Caprifig (Maltese = Dukkar).  There are three varieties of this:  the White Caprifig (Maltese = Dukkar Abjad); the Red Caprifig (Maltese = Dukkar Ahmar) and the Green Caprifig (Maltese = Dukkar Bzenguli)
  • The Black Bourgeassotte (Maltese = Parsott Iswed)
  • The White Bourgeassotte (Maltese = Parsott Abjad)
  • The Long Violet Fig (Maltese = Farkizzan, probably from Ficarazzi, in Sicily)
  • The Small Black Fig (Maltese = Parsott Salvagg)
  • The Long Black Fig (Maltese = Bzengul Iswed)
  • The Round Violet Fig (Maltese = Tin Iswed)
  • The Dikkiena Fig (Maltese = Tin tad-Dikkiena - a locality near Siggiewi where it is mainly grown)
  • The Large, Broad, Red Fig (Maltese = Tin Ixheb Catt and sometimes called Tin ta' San Sidori)
  • The Greenish Red Fig (Maltese = Tin Ixheb tat-Tqaddid)
  • The Round Red Fig (Maltese = Tin Ixheb tal-Mejda)
  • The Saint John's Fig (Maltese = Bajtar ta' San Gwann)
  • The Long White Fig of Calabria (Maltese = Tin tal-Hannieqa or Bzengul Abjad or Tin Kalabriz)
  • The Smirne Fig (Maltese = Tin ta' Smirni)
  • The Thick-Skinned Fig (Maltese = Tin Gludi)
  • The Golden Fig (Maltese = Tin Isfar)
  • The Luscious White Fig (Maltese = Tin Zibdi)
  • The Luscious Grey Fig (Maltese = Tin Zibdi Irmiedi)
  • The Common White Fig (Maltese = Tin Abjad)
  • The Large Flat White Fig (Maltese = Tin tal-Bahar or Tin tal-Buskett)
  • The Round White Fig (Maltese = Parsott Abjad Salvagg)
  • The Small White Fig (Maltese = Tin Abjad Salvagg)
  • The Zondadari Fig (Maltese = Tin ta' San Sidori, the latter being a corruption of Zondadari, the Grand Master who is thought to have it introduced in Malta from Italy)
  • The Sour Fig (Maltese = Tina Qarsa)
  • The Long Yellow Fig (Maltese = Tin Langasi)
  • The Large Round White Fig (Maltese = Tin tal-Bahrija as it is grown in this locality)
  • The Long Green Fig (Maltese = Tin Ahdar or Tin Hadrani)
  • The Sa Maison Fig (Maltese = Bzengul Abjad tas-Sur, where it grows)
  • The White Lia Fig (Maltese = Tin Abjad ta' Hal Lija)
  • The Large Dark Red Fig of Naxxar (Maltese = Tina ta' Alla u Ommu as it grows in this locality)
  • Fig Pope Leo XIII (Maltese = Tina tal-Papa)
  • The Variegated Fig (Maltese = Tina Imnaqqxa or Tina ta' Spanja)

... and as the saying goes, variety is the spice of life!!

Bye for now!!!
