Catching up around here with the busy summer! Many Partners and teachers had the opportunity to attend the GLOBE Annual Meeting this year since it was virtual. From a SciAct Nugget: 17 teachers from five areas around the Great Lakes are participating in the Great Lakes Student Research Campaign professional development funded by NOAA’s B-WET Program leveraging GLOBE Mission EARTH in a hybrid model of local and virtual training. This is a collaborative effort of five GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) partners: Dr. Kevin Czajkowski from the University of Toledo located near the downstream part of the Maumee River, Dr. Amanda Gilbert, Defiance College located near the Maumee River in Defiance, OH, Dr. Mitchell Klett from Northern Michigan University located near Lake Superior in Marquette, MI, David Bydlowski from Wayne RESA (part of the AREN project) located near the River Rouge in Detroit, MI, and Dr. Michael Jabot from State University of New York at Fredonia located near the northeastern part of Lake Erie. The professional development continued in the afternoons virtually online with sessions focused on understanding the data that was collected and comparing ground data with satellite data. Teachers engaged with national and local speakers including John McLaughlin, Matthew Zika and Dr. Carol Stepien from NOAA, Elizabeth Joyner and Angela Rizzi from NASA Langley Research Center, and Jennifer Bourgeault from the US GLOBE Office.
John Moore, Institute for Earth Observations NJ GLOBE Partnership, held a webinar 30 July 2020 called “Investigating the Earth System.”
Garry Harris (Center for Sustainable Communities) and Tracy Ostrom (WestEd/UC Berkeley) provided an online professional development workshop for teachers in Hawaii. See this link for the full story and the initiative Dr. Linda Bailey Hayden (Elizabeth City State University) leads at IEEE.
During the week of the Annual Meeting, the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of New Hampshire presented a workshop “Soil frost tubes & the vernal window: Collaboration within the Frost Tube campaign community.”
During the Annual Meeting, the IGES Partnership presented a workshop "GLOBE Family Science Opportunities and Resources" with Jessica Taylor and Marilé Colón Robles from the NASA Langley Partnership.

US Regional GLOBE Student Research Symposia (SRS)

All the SRS projects and STEM professionals' reviewer comments from 2020 were moved to the Student Research Projects area of the website.

From the #shutdownSTEM discussion with the GLOBE Partner community, the U.S. Partners and teachers decided to add a book discussion to our meet-ups. The first book group discussion was 31 July 2020 and covered the first half of “Teaching When the World is on Fire” edited by Lisa Delpit. An anonymous donor supported the purchase of 8 e-books for participants.
Dr. David Padgett, Rosalba Giarratano and Dr. Nikita Imani have provided consultation on the GLOBE SRS videos that are in development with regard to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Learned about Data Elevates (https://www.dataelevates.com/).
Haley Wicklein started working on a hyperlinked version of the Carbon Travels Game (this will download a PDF of the original activity) which will assist teachers in using it in a virtual learning environment.
Met with the teachers during the B-WET/GLOBE professional development led by the University of Toledo and included teachers from the SUNY Fredonia, Wayne RESA and Northern Michigan University Partnerships. Topics included the U.S. GLOBE Program Facebook page, SRS resources and other U.S. initiatives.
In discussion with the USDA Forest Service regarding a Watercooler presentation for GLOBE Partners and teachers using the i-Tree MyTree app.
