Three GLOBE Regions Send Students to the University of Texas at Tyler for Student Research Symposium

GLOBE Students, teachers, and partners from three GLOBE Regions came together in Tyler, Texas, to participate in the student research symposium hosted by the University of Texas Tyler GLOBE Partnership and the Texas STEM Coalition. Sixty-eight students from Connecticut, Louisiana, and Texas visited the University of Texas at Tyler on 19 and 20 May for the Southwest, Southeast, and Northeast & Mid-Atlantic Student Research Symposium. Attending from seven schools, the students presented 16 projects highlighting their research using GLOBE protocols and data.

The event started on Friday evening with a talk by Christopher Sherman of NASA Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

Saturday began with peer review of the student research posters, followed by presentations to professional reviewers. Faculty members and industry professionals participated in the poster reviews providing student research teams with great feedback.

Students participated in a field day that included GLOBE Protocols for tree height and macroinvertebrates on the beautiful UT Tyler campus. All students also had the opportunity to visit the UT Tyler campus and learn about STEM majors available. Students were also treated to TexMex fiesta dinner and a Texas barbecue.

Participating schools included the UT Tyler University Academy at Tyler, UT Tyler University Academy at Longview, UT Tyler University Academy at Palestine, Stamford High School, Kenner Discovery High School, St Helena College and Career Academy, and All Saints Episcopal School (Fort Worth). 

After the SRS the All Saints Episcopal School and Kenner Discovery High School teams were invited to present their posters at the International GLOBE Conference in Denver in July 2023.


Students were recognized for their projects in five categories:

Research Process (2 projects recognized):

  1. Shreyans Daga, Nitish Gannu and Rihan Thajeer from Stamford High School for A Novel Helium-Based Radiation Shield for Terrestrial Radiation
  2. Umama Khan, Rebekah Daniel and Ian Orr from University Academy Tyler for Human Impact on Soil Quality

Indigenous/community knowledge (2 projects recognized):

  1. Urwah Abbas, Somaitah Hoq, Marym Abdelaal and Blair Burd from Kenner Discovery High School for Exploring Urban Heat Island Effect with Ground Cover Types & Surface Temperature Changes
  2. Hayden Burns from University Academy Tyler for The causes and effects of the Dungeness Crab Die-Off on the Pacific Northwest Coast

Community Impact and Engagement (2 projects recognized):

  1. Jesus Gonzalez, Ja'Myria Robertson, Noe Gonzalez and Horace Dees from St. Helena College and Career Academy for Watt's Up? Measuring Solar Energy by Clouds in Rural America
  2. Emily Chen, Krista Jenkins, Jaiden Harden, Victor Espinosa and Yash Patel from University Academy Palestine for Health and Water Quality of Upper Lake, Palestine, Texas

GLOBE Protocols: Hailey Johnson, Emily Roberts, Baylee Mauer and Mykayla Alvis from University Academy Longview for Relationship between average temperature and vegetation

21st Century Skills: Isabella Rodriguez, Emily Torres, Jayci Robbins and Luca Ferrara from All Saints' Episcopal School for A Water and Soil Analysis to Assess Vulnerability of Biodiversity, of a Campus Riparian Zone, to Human Activities
