More than 200 U.S. GLOBE Students Attend the 2023 Regional Student Research Symposia

More than 200 students from around the United States shared their research at four GLOBE U.S. Regional Student Research Symposia (SRS) in April and May 2023. It was wonderful to see the community of GLOBE students discussing their projects; the last time these regional SRS were held was in 2019. There were originally six symposia planned—one in each U.S. GLOBE region—but eventually they were narrowed down to four when two symposia were joined with the Southwest region.

Our partners reported that 218 students presented their research posters in 86 projects to their peers and STEM professional reviewers. Also attending were 45 educators, 20 U.S. GLOBE Partners from 10 Partnerships, and 54 others as reviewers, scientists, and event support.

Aside from their presentations, students participated in a variety of science activities. Many practiced GLOBE protocols, listened to scientists talk about their research and careers, explored the local environment, and learned about programs of study at the hosting locations.

Following are summaries about each symposium and links to individual stories with more details.

21-23 April—Midwest SRS, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisc.

Approximately 70 people—middle and high school-aged students, teachers, and GLOBE partners—attended the Midwest GLOBE SRS at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on 21-23 April 2023. The students presented 27 projects.

24-25 April—Northwest SRS, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, Alaska

On 24 April 2023, 65 students from Montana, Washington, and Alaska gathered at the Wedgewood Hotel and Conference Center in Fairbanks, Alaska, for the Northwest Regional GLOBE Student Research Symposium. The students presented 26 projects.

12-13 May—Pacific SRS, Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, Watsonville, Calif.

The Pacific SRS began at Elkhorn Slough NERR with a series of science activities. The next day at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory, 35 students from eight schools presented 12 projects.

19-20 May—Southwest, Southeast, and Northeast & Mid-Atlantic SRS, University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler, Texas

Sixty-eight students from seven schools from Connecticut, Louisiana, and Texas visited the University of Texas at Tyler on 19 and 20 May. The students presented 21 projects.
