NASA Langley Partners with Camp Discovery and Longleaf Middle School: ZooBot Magnet in a GLOBE Surface Temperature Investigation

Longleaf Middle School: ZooBot Magnet recently completed a surface temperature investigation with students in partnership with the NASA Langley GLOBE Partnership and Camp Discovery. The teachers and administrators completed surface temperature training prior to implementation of the project. Students in grades 6-8 had the opportunity to visit Camp Discovery for a field experience, where Camp Director Amy Ellisor shared with them the proper technique for measuring surface temperature data. Back at school, 6th grade students collected data for grass in the presence and absence of trees, 7th grade students focused their data on grass and soil with the presence and absence of trees, and the 8th grade students investigated grass and asphalt with the presence and absence of trees. The 8th grade also compiled all of the data, looking at the various relationships between the different variables. The final aspect of the investigation was to meet with NASA GLOBE Tina Harte to share the data they had collected and discuss some of the questions they had based on their findings. This partnership will continue with extensions already being planned for the 2022-2023 school year. (Image right: students at Camp Discovery in Blythewood, SC).
