Purdue Science K-12 Outreach Hosts Summer 2019 Teacher Professional Development: Integrated STEM in the Environment

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - Purdue Science K-12 Outreach hosted 17 middle school and high school classroom teachers at Ross Biological Reserve in July 2019 for the professional development session: Integrating STEM in the Environment.  A minimum of two teachers from each participating school were required for participation in this four day professional development opportunity. Additionally, administrators from participating schools were asked for their support to release participating teachers for a follow-up half day professional development by summer professional development facilitators to their schools during the Fall 2019 semester.  Participating teachers received GLOBE certification along with a certificate for Professional Growth Points at the conclusion of this professional development. Purdue alumni were excited about the work that Purdue K-12 Outreach does with teachers. These generous alumni supported this professional development with a donation that allowed all teacher participants to receive kits of materials that they were able to take back to their classrooms in order to facilitate GLOBE protocols with their students.  During the first day of the professional development, participating teachers learned GLOBE Biometry protocols and participated in an inquiry learning session. On Day Two, participants learned Hydrosphere protocols and participated in an Engineering Design challenge. On Day Three, participants learned Pedosphere protocols and started brainstorming ways in which they could incorporate student research projects into their classrooms. Finally, on Day 4, the participants learned Atmosphere protocols along with how to navigate the GLOBE Data Visualization portal.  Teachers also had time to work together on curriculum development to include GLOBE protocols and student research projects. type: globe-news
