2023 GLOBE Annual Meeting in Denver a Resounding Success
The 2023 GLOBE Annual Meeting was a resounding success. Taking place in Denver, Colorado, USA, the meeting became a place of collaboration, learning, and stewardship for hundreds of attendees from the GLOBE Community.
Over the meeting’s week-long course, attendees participated in presentations, workshops, and off-site excursions that showcased the meeting’s theme: “GLOBE Science Opens Global Benefits” (see left). Sessions demonstrated use of GLOBE data in classrooms, telling stories through research and data visualization, and building connections among members both inside GLOBE’s diverse community and outside to new groups. A prominent feature of the Annual Meeting were three keynote presentations by experts in various science fields. Dr. Leila Farhadi (Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The George Washington University) spoke on space-based and field site observations of the terrestrial water cycle. Dr. Scott McIntosh (Deputy Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research - NCAR) presented on solar physics and the history of eclipses. Dr. Victoria Metcalf (Principal Advisor of Vocational Education and Training, New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission) spoke about Antarctic education and global relationships stemming from it. A special session titled “Contextualizing GLOBE for Indigenous Communities” was also held, featuring a panel discussion led by Ren Freeman, Al Kuslikis, Teresa Newberry, Elena Sparrow, and Victoria Metcalf on exploring GLOBE protocols and best practices through weaving with indigenous communities’ knowledge systems. Participants were also able to attend a training on accessibility.
Students that attended the meeting took part in many activities (see right), including: a poster presentation by students who participated in the International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) and Student Research Symposia (SRS); data collection at Denver’s Metropolitan State University (MSU) campus and the Learning Lab; tours of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and NCAR Mesa Lab; and a session at Denver’s History Colorado Center. Other attendees also had the chance to participate in off-site experiences, including tours of the MSU Auraria Campus Solar Array and NCAR Mesa Lab, and a “GLOBE Gives Back” clean-up of Denver’s Cherry Creek.
A highlight of the Annual Meeting was a presentation by the Moon Tree Foundation, where President Rosemary Roosa spoke about the history of Moon Trees. A sapling sycamore (below) was dedicated and will be planted at the NCAR Mesa Lab this fall.
