  • Kenya
    • GLOBE Program undertook training for UNEP Staff: The GLOBE Program held a meeting with staff from the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) in the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). The team was led by Mark Brettenny, GLOBE Africa Regional Coordinator and Charles Mwangi, Deputy Country Coordinator for the GLOBE Program in Kenya. The meeting was followed by a 1 day hands-on training on GLOBE Protocol for the UNEP staff. (photo - will check my archives). Courtesy of this training, the UNEP Headquarters became a "GLOBE school" under Kenya since 2016. The training was conducted prior to the commencement of the Lake Victoria Learning Expedition (GLOBE Star Lake Victoria Learning Exhibition).
    • UNEP invited GLOBE Program in Kenya and GLOBE Students in Kenya to participate during the Second UN Environment Assembly meeting in May 2016: The Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) Unit, which is a unit within the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) in United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), invited GLOBE Program in Kenya to participate in United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) pre-assembly forum. The Science-Policy Forum took place on May 20, 2016, and the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum was on May 21, 2016. During the Science-Policy Forum, St. Scholastica Catholic Primary School did a presentation about the GLOBE Program, GLOBE Protocols and current initiatives in their school, including an on-going research project where they are exploring the effect of change in atmospheric conditions (temperature, relative humidity and precipitation) influence the occurrence of influenza. During the UNEP Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF), Charles Mwangi, GLOBE Deputy Country Coordinator for Kenya, was a panelist in the GMGSF panel discussing "How Major Groups Technical Expertise and Research, Citizen Science and Indigenous Knowledge Contribute to Advance the Monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Implementation" especially in light of the GEO-6 Regional Assessments which for the first time attempted to incorporate citizen science and indigenous knowledge. Mr. Mwangi discussed the importance of citizen science data and gave illustrations based on the GLOBE program on how the data collected could be validated.
    • UNEP engaged GLOBE Schools in Nairobi, Kenya in the Air Quality Project: UNEP has installed 4 Air Quality units in GLOBE schools to undertake a pilot on Air Quality kits. The team led by Priyanka DeSouza and Victor Nthusi both from the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) in the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) undertook outreach activities to the schools to share the findings of the research.
    • UNEP's GEO Unit invited GLOBE Assistant Country Coordinator to contribute to the Sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) report: The Global Environmental Outlook Unit in United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) invited Charles Mwangi, GLOBE Assistant Country Coordinator, to be a Coordinating Lead Author in the drafting of the Sixth Global Environment Outlook Assessment report on the section dealing with Data and Knowledge (Citizen Science) - Chapter 3 &25, courtesy of his affiliation to the GLOBE Program. This report has since been concluded and mentions GLOBE in Chapter 25. He is currently the co-chair for the derivative product meant for the youth, GEO for Youth, which is awaiting to be launched.
