The GLOBE Program Overview

GLOBE is a community of people passionate about teaching and learning Earth System Science. Members across the world collaborate with each other and use GLOBE’s extensive collection of resources to do real science. They provide environmental data that can be used to complement NASA research efforts and further community or individual investigations, thereby helping people gain a better understanding of the environment.

  • The GLOBE Program offers exciting ways for teachers to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics into their classrooms. GLOBE provides teaching modules, learning activities and a variety of other resources to support teachers/formal educators. More
  • The GLOBE community includes various informal educators, such as museum and library staff, as well as anyone else who contributes to scientific literacy in out-of-school time settings, for example, in an after-school or summer program. More
  • With The GLOBE Program's app, GLOBE Observer, citizen scientists can start learning more about the natural environment, contribute to global measurement campaigns and collaborate on science projects with other users in more than 125 countries. More
  • The GLOBE Program serves students at all levels of education. GLOBE offers opportunities for aspiring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professionals, as well as anyone else interested in learning a scientific approach to problem solving. With multiple Student Research Symposia, worldwide measurement campaigns and opportunities to network with peers, students keep finding new ways to use GLOBE. More
  • Scientists and researchers can support their scientific projects by using the GLOBE Program’s databases, which contain over 230 million data points. STEM professionals can also serve as student mentors, science symposia judges and contribute to GLOBE in other ways through the GLOBE International STEM Network (GISN). More
  • The GLOBE Program's U.S. Partners promote science education and environmental literacy by recruiting schools and providing training and mentoring opportunities for GLOBE students and educators. More
  • Outside the U.S., GLOBE is implemented through bilateral agreements between the U.S. government and the governments of partner nations. GLOBE Country Coordinators recruit schools and provide training opportunities and mentoring activities for teachers. More

Vision and Mission

In 1994, when the concept of GLOBE was launched, the original GLOBE team developed vision and mission statements for the program. Largely unchanged since their creation, these statements are as follows:

Vision: A worldwide community of students, teachers, scientists, and citizens working together to better understand, sustain, and improve Earth's environment at local, regional, and global scales.

Mission: To increase awareness of individuals throughout the world about the global environment, contribute to increased scientific understanding of the Earth and support improved student achievement in science and mathematics.

These statements remain the guiding principles for The GLOBE Program as it continues to move forward, expanding its community and consequently its growth in its scientific database.

Announced in 1994, The GLOBE Program began operations on Earth Day 1995. Today, the international GLOBE network has grown to include representatives from more than 125 participating countries coordinating GLOBE activities that are integrated into their local and regional communities.
