air-temperature
Review the Air Temperature field guide to learn how to measure air temperature using an alcohol-filled thermometer or digital thermometer, and where you should place your instrument shelter, if you are using one.
GLOBE offers two different eTraining options for Air Temperature:
Learn how to set up an automated weather station (AWS) to collect a variety of data to upload to GLOBE.
Automated Davis Weather Stations
Learn how to share Davis weather station data with GLOBE.
barometric-pressure
clouds
This interactive web-based tool allows you to calibrate your eye by practicing cloud cover estimation using images on the computer.
Cloud Type Practice
This interactive web-based tool asks a series of questions to help you narrow down the type of cloud you are observing. It can be used both for practice and in the field to identify clouds.
precipitation-rainfall
Review the Precipitation – Rainfall field guide to learn the steps for selecting the appropriate place to install a rain gauge and how to measure daily rain water with accuracy. You will also be able to determine the pH of precipitation by testing the collected rain water using salt and pH paper.
GLOBE offers two different eTraining options for Precipitation – Rainfall:
Automated Weather Stations
Learn how to set up an automated weather station (AWS) to collect a variety of data to upload to GLOBE.
Davis Automated Weather Stations
Learn how to share Davis weather station data with GLOBE.
precipitation-snowfall
Review the Precipitation – Snowfall field guide to learn how to measure snow depth, first by selecting the appropriate place for taking the measurements. You will also be able to determine the snow liquid equivalent by collecting a sample of new snow or existing snow from the snowpack and measuring the snow after it melts. Just as in the Rainfall protocol, you will also measure the pH by testing the collected snow liquid using salt and pH paper. Additional training:
Automated Weather Stations
Learn how to set up an automated weather station (AWS) to collect a variety of data to upload to GLOBE.
Davis Automated Weather Stations
Learn how to share Davis weather station data with GLOBE.
relative-humidity
Review the Relative Humidity - Digital Hygrometer field guide or Relative Humidity - Sling Psychrometer field guide to learn how and where to measure relative humidity using a hygrometer or psychrometer.
GLOBE offers two different eTraining options for Relative Humidity:
surface-temperature
Review the Surface Temperature field guide to learn how to collect surface temperature using an infrared thermometer.
GLOBE offers two different eTraining options for Surface Temperature:
water-vapor
Review the Water Vapor field guide to learn how to use a near-infrared sun photometer to measure the amount of sunlight reaching the ground at wavelengths that are correlated to water vapor.
