Biosphere

This module provides an introduction to the Biosphere investigation. You will learn how to conduct GLOBE’s biosphere protocols so that the data you collect is of appropriate precision and accuracy. You will learn about the MUC classification system used to classify land cover at our study site, and get an overview of the biometry and phenology field procedures. You will also review the steps you will take to upload your observations to the GLOBE database and visualize data using the GLOBE Visualization system.
Learn how to document a Land Cover Study Site so that you can take biometry measurements using the GLOBE Biosphere Protocols. This module reviews the selection of a GLOBE biometry site, reviews the procedure for locating your site using a GPS receiver, and provides a step-by-step introduction of the protocol method. After completing this module, you will be able to define land cover and explain how these measurements can support interpretation of satellite images, and identify and document a land cover sampling site for use in GLOBE investigations.
Learn how to take canopy cover and ground cover measurements at your GLOBE Land Cover Sample Site. This module reviews the selection of a GLOBE land cover study site, reviews the procedure for locating your site using a GPS receiver and provides a step-by-step introduction of how to measure canopy and ground cover. After completing this module, you will understand how your measurements will assist in interpretation of satellite images, be able to conduct canopy and ground cover measurements in the field, and upload your data to GLOBE.

Supporting Material:

In this virtual field experience, practice constructing and using a densiometer to digitally make measurements of canopy cover as part of the GLOBE Biometry protocol.
Learn how to measure the tree circumference at your GLOBE Land Cover Sample Site. This module provides a step-by-step introduction of the protocol method and discusses the importance of tree circumference data for understanding changes in the Earth system. After completing the module, you will be able to explain how tree circumference data is to be used to understand changes in forest structure and climate. You will know how to conduct tree circumference measurements in the field, and upload your data to GLOBE.
Learn how to determine the graminoid (grass-like plant) biomass at your GLOBE Land Cover Sample Site. This module provides a step-by-step introduction of the protocol method and discusses the importance of obtaining graminoid biomass data. After completing this module, you will understand how graminoid biomass measurements can be used in scientific investigations. You will know how to conduct sampling procedures in the field and complete measurement procedures in the lab, and be able to upload your data to GLOBE.
Learn how to measure a tree height at your GLOBE Land Cover Sample Site. Each module describes how to build a clinometer, the scientific instrument used to obtain tree and shrub height; provides a step-by-step introduction of how to measure the height of grass-like plants; and provides a step by step introduction of one of the 5 methods that can be used when measuring tree or shrub height. The directions for measuring tree and shrub height differ depending on whether you are measuring on a slope or not, and whether your eyes are higher or lower than the tree base, so select the slide set that best describes your anticipated situation.
