How Cool Are GLOBE Schools?
On April 8, GLOBE Ireland hosted an inspiring
international webinar as part of its Cool Schools campaign,
bringing together schools and experts to explore the Urban Heat Island
(UHI) effect. This outstanding initiative, led by GLOBE
Ireland, was not limited to Irish
participants—schools from Malta, South Africa, Mauritius,
and Ghana joined Irish students to share and compare their research.
Open to both primary and secondary schools, the webinar encouraged international collaboration and sharing. Participating students presented their work in English and compared data collected during the March GLOBE Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period, gaining insights into how different regions experience the UHI effect.
The event began with two engaging expert talks. Dr. Gerald Mills from University College Dublin (UCD) explored how nature-based solutions can help mitigate urban heating, while Jonathon McGovern from Met Éireann provided an accessible look at local climate trends in Ireland.
Following the expert presentations, students showcased their investigations using the GLOBE Surface Temperature Protocol. They presented findings, discussed local observations, and discovered surprising differences in their results—making the webinar a truly international and student-led learning experience.

A big thank you to all the schools and educators who contributed to this fantastic international meeting. GLOBE Ireland’s contribution in creating international, student research opportunities like this continues to foster collaboration and student research both in Ireland and across the GLOBE community.
