Remembering U.S. GLOBE Partner Dr. Barbie Buckner
This message comes from the U.S. GLOBE Partners at NASA Langley Research Center.
It is with deep sadness that we share that our friend and colleague Dr. Barbie Buckner passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Our hearts are truly broken. Barbie joined the NASA Langley Science Activation team in 2024 after many years of dedicated service within NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement. She supported multiple NASA Science Activation projects: GLOBE Mission Earth (GME); NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC); and Place-Based Learning to Advance Connections, Education and Stewardship (PLACES). Barbie was an Einstein Fellow, Solar System Ambassador, and an inspirational STEM teacher.
She was excited to be part of the GLOBE community and was moved by the warm welcome when she attended the 2024 GLOBE Annual Meeting. She was always the first to volunteer to make GLOBE observations for various science initiatives and her passion for supporting students was evident in her work with the Civil Air Patrol Cadets during the Aviation Weather Mission. She applied her math education skills to improving My NASA Data resources. Her years in the classroom made her an ideal facilitator to engage the My NASA Data product reviewers and lead our webinars.
Barbie was passionate about education and NASA. She dedicated her life to fostering a love for learning in all of those around her. Her service will be viewable via the Bastian Church of God Facebook livestream on Saturday, December 13 at 1 p.m. ET. For more information, please see Barbie’s obituary.
