Join GLOBE Mission Earth Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period (UHI-IOP) October 2025
GLOBE Mission Earth invites educators, citizen scientists, and students all over the world to participate in the Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period (UHI-IOP) throughout October. You and your students can be part of this important data collection by collecting surface temperature, air temperature, and cloud observations.
Urban Heat Island continues to be an important challenge to study around the world. This year, GLOBE is going to continue its focus on our schools and the different surfaces at your school especially those surfaces the students interact on. How hot is your playground? sports fields? or parking lot? Does painting parking spaces at the high school make the parking cooler?
Prior to the start of the UHI-IOP, participants will need to:
- become familiar with the protocols (scroll down the Atmosphere Protocol eTraining page to find the ”Surface Temperature” eTraining and “Clouds” eTraining);
- define your study site(s) and upload the information into the GLOBE database to be ready for data collection; and
- gather the necessary equipment (a list of equipment needed can be found below).
Equipment needed:
• Handheld infrared thermometer (Etekcity IRTs are inexpensive
and seem to work well)
• Air temperature thermometer
•
Recording sheet or GLOBE Observer App
To join GLOBE Mission Earth, UHI-IOP, please send an email to
