2026 VSS Information

VSS Theme: GLOBE Data Detectives: Using Data to Explore Change in Your Local Environment

The "GLOBE Data Detectives" VSS theme challenges participants to identify one or more change(s) that have impacted their local community and examine these changes using multiple data sources:

• Data collected using GLOBE protocols
• Data from the GLOBE database
• NASA satellite mission data

Participants should document the environmental changes that have occurred and their effects on Earth’s system through the analysis of various data sources. If the changes have resulted in improved environmental health, explain how. If the changes have had a negative impact on the community, suggest how you might offer a solution to this problem.

Create a visual narrative using StoryMaps and/or a poster presentation, video presentation, or podcast to tell your community's science story through data and highlight the interconnectedness of natural and human systems. 
 

• This is an abbreviated VSS. Due to the shortened timeline, participants are required to submit only an abstract and presentation. Written reports are optional. See the VSS Project Requirements for more information.

• Participants who are in the early stages of developing a research project, may submit a presentation that outlines their project proposal, including proposed research question(s), study site description, and data collection plan. This is a great way to get feedback on the early stages of a research project! Check out the Project Proposal Template for an example of items that could be included.

• While we welcome projects from all GLOBE regions, projects must be submitted in English due to the abbreviated timeline. Translation tools such as Google Translate, DeepL, Canva, or similar translation software are permitted.
