YLACES Celebrates a Strong Year of Support for Student Research and the GLOBE Community
YLACES (Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists) continues to help students around the world take part in meaningful environmental science, and this year’s efforts highlight its reach along with its strong collaboration with the GLOBE Program.
In 2026, YLACES awarded 48 new grants, including 9 Student Research Symposium grants and 39 research equipment grants. Together, these awards help students move beyond collecting data to asking questions, investigating environmental issues, and presenting their findings. YLACES-supported Student Research Symposia give students the chance to complete the research process by presenting their work and receiving feedback from peers and STEM professionals, and those events are based on GLOBE’s regional symposium model.
This year, YLACES welcomed Lyn D. Wigbels to its board of directors. A former senior NASA executive and GLOBE leader, Wigbels served the GLOBE Program in several management and operational roles, including deputy director and director of international programs. Wigbels will bring her experience in science, education, and international collaboration to the board.
