on 22 April: Earth Day!
The GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO) will be streaming a live Earth Day YouTube broadcast to celebrate. You are cordially invited to attend this event – which, most importantly, celebrates you and your commitment to The GLOBE Program and to the work that advances our knowledge and understanding of Earth. (Check the "News" section of the website for the date and time of the broadcast.)

The NASA GLOBE Clouds "Spring Cloud Observations Data Challenge" is On! (15 March - 15 April)
Thank you for participating in the NASA GLOBE Clouds “Spring Cloud Observations Data Challenge.” Enter up to 10 cloud observations per day (through 15 April) using the GLOBE Program’s data entry options or the GLOBE Observer app. Participants with the most observations will be congratulated by a NASA scientist with a video posted on the NASA GLOBE Clouds website.

Register for the 2018 GLOBE Learning Expedition/Annual Meeting by 16 April! $75 USD Late Fee After 16 April!
The deadline to register for the 2018 GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE) and the 22nd Annual Meeting is 16 April! After 16 April, there will be a late registration fee of $75! Also, the deadline to reserve a room is 30 April. Rooms requested after this date will be at the discretion of the hotel, and group pricing cannot be guaranteed.

Did You Participate in the 2018 IVSS? Then Mark Your Calendar for 06 April Feedback and Badges Will Be Sent to Teachers AND There Will Be a Live Drawing for Student Stipends for the 2018 GLE
First, if you participated in the 2018 IVSS, GIO would like to express a big “Thank You” for making this year’s research and science adventure a success! You are the power behind the purpose of GLOBE!
Second, mark your calendar for 06 April:
· Badges and Feedback: Virtual badges will be posted on the GLOBE website, and feedback from judges will be sent to teachers.
· Live Drawing for Student Stipends: There will be a live drawing to see what four student projects (two from the United States and two from international locations) will receive a $2,000 USD stipend to help with the costs of attending the 2018 GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE) in Killarney, Ireland. During this webinar, participants will hear from students in Taiwan, Croatia, Finland, and the United States as they describe freshwater resources in their regions, and as they share their investigations to help them learn more about water in their environment. Teachers and students are encouraged to join this webinar – and to learn from their peers around the world. (For the last webinar, over 100 students and 20 adults joined in from around the world!) GLOBE Mission EARTH Teacher (10 April) and Student (13 April) Webinar: "Climate Communications -- Connecting the Classroom to Climate Change"
U.S. Community: GLOBE Mission EARTH (GME) will host a webinar on Tuesday, 10 April (8:00 p.m. EDT): “Climate Communications – Connecting the Classroom to Climate Change.” A student follow-up webinar will take place on Friday, 13 April (1:00 p.m. EDT): “Using Student Voice on Climate Change and the Impact on Communities.”
During the teacher webinar, Susan Joy Hassol, Director of Climate Communications, will present some climate communication strategies that are simple and memorable. The event will include a discussion regarding how to make more effective use of imagery, metaphor, and narrative; in short, how to be a better storyteller of the most important story there is to tell. The student webinar will be a great time for students to connect with scientists!

U.S. Community: Registration Deadlines for 2018 SRS Fast Approaching!
Registration for the 2018 United States Student Research Symposia (SRS) is open! At the SRS, students from across the United States have the opportunity to come together at one of six face-to-face regional symposia to share the results of field investigations using GLOBE program protocols. As in previous years, the Student Research Symposiums are open to all U.S. GLOBE students and teachers.
SRS Registration Deadlines:
· Southeast: deadline passed
· Northeast/Mid-Atlantic: 04 April
· Southwest: 04 April
· Pacific: 18 April
· Midwest 18 April
· Northwest: 01 May
All event attendees – students, teachers, GLOBE partners, chaperones, etc. – need to register for the SRS individually, and need to sign a Media Release.

U.S. Community: GLOBE Mission EARTH Satellites Student Conference 01 May (Toledo, Ohio, USA)
U.S. Community (K-16 students and their teachers): Join the GLOBE Mission EARTH Satellites Conference on 01 May (8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). The event will take place at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Register by midnight on 11 April to qualify for a $10 student scholarship (after this date, a $10 student fee will apply).
At this event, students will present their research papers in a poster session. Awards will be given to the best research projects in each grade category.
GLOBE Mission EARTH is a collaborative of multiple institutions across the United States formed to increase involvement in The GLOBE Program. The mission is to improve education and involvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by increasing participation of students and citizens in The GLOBE Program.

A GLOBE "Events/Projects to Campaigns" Checklist is Available!
Did you know that GIO has an Events/Projects to Campaign Checklist for community members? This checklist was developed as part of an interactive development process among the GLOBE community, GLOBE Working Groups, and NASA Headquarters. The overall purpose of the document is to provide guidance and streamline requirements for community-led efforts and to ensure that community members know the processes involved in requesting and performing events, projects and campaigns.
The checklist, “GLOBE Events to Campaigns Spreadsheet,” is available on several different pages on the GLOBE website (for diverse GLOBE community members), including in:

Track Nature's Green Wave: 2018 European Phenology Campaign is On!
The 2018 European Phenology Campaign is underway! This year (through December), the campaign will use the mobile app “GrowApp,” which allows students to gather GLOBE phenology and atmosphere data and compare their results to satellite data. The app also enables students to make a time-lapse movie of how trees change during a season.

Tech Update
The GLOBE Program's website had two new updates during the month of March 2018.
Community members now have the opportunity to write and send a personal note when making a friend request of another GLOBE member on the site. In addition, “Events” can now be filtered for both “Past” and “Upcoming” events
Looking forward:
The technology team is working on a new Vis Time animation. Through this, community members will be able to view measurements over time with a new timeline interface. This can then be downloaded as an animation file.
Plus, look for the new Carbon Cycle Protocol. Upon completion, students and teachers will be able to enter measurement data for three different types of vegetation (tree, shrub, and herbaceous). The system will also be able to calculate the total amount of carbon that is sequestered in the plant life.
Share Your STEM Stories with the GLOBE Community!
GLOBE is gathering stories of students, teachers, and alumni who have been influenced by their GLOBE experiences to pursue STEM education. We want to hear from:
- Current GLOBE students who intend to pursue further education in STEM;
- Former GLOBE students who are engaged in higher education in STEM areas or who have gone into STEM careers; and
- Teachers who have sought further training in STEM subjects, either through GLOBE training or through other professional development training, in order to enhance their capabilities as teachers or for new careers in STEM

NASA STEM Educator Webinars
The NASA STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative (EPDC) is presenting a series of webinars open to all educators. All pre-service, K-12, and informal educators, as well as university faculty, are invited to join NASA education specialists to learn about NASA missions, activities, lesson plans, educator guides, and online resources that integrate NASA and STEM into the classroom An upcoming webinar "Earth Right Now: GLOBE Atmosphere, Clouds, and Contrails" is geared towards educators in grades K-12. On Tuesday, 17 April (6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT), the NASA EPDC at Texas State University is providing a one-hour webinar. Participants will learn about clouds and contrails using GLOBE protocols. This educational activity aligns with NASA Education API 2.4.2 (Continue to support STEM educators through the delivery of NASA education content and engagement in educator professional development opportunities.)
GLOBE Mission EARTH Offers Professional Development Opportunity for Career Tech Teachers: 11-15 June (Toledo, Ohio, USA)
U.S. Career Tech Teachers (grades 7-12): Join GLOBE Mission EARTH’s STEM Institute this summer (11-15 June) at the University of Toledo (Ohio, USA) and become a GLOBE-trained teacher. Learn how to collect environmental data and produce geographic visualizations. The deadline to apply is 30 April. Space is limited to 15 participants!
Participants will learn how to use an Aeropod attached to a kite in order to capture a variety of atmospheric data and visual imagery. Teachers will receive: official certification as a trained GLOBE teacher; free GLOBE-approved testing equipment; information on connecting student data and research with NASA satellite missions; and a $500 stipend (upon completion of the requirements).

U.S. GLOBE Teachers: 23-29 April is National Environmental Education Week!
From 23-29 April, the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) is hosting the nation’s largest celebration of environmental education for the 14th annual National Environmental Education Week (U.S. only). Each year, NEEF partners with educators, students, government agencies, businesses, communities, nonprofit organizations, and others to inspire environmental learning and encourage stewardship of essential resources: land, air, and water.
