ACTIVITIES 1 AND 2

Hello! My name is Dolores Dobrinjkic. I am a GLOBE teacher at Natural Sciences and Graphics Arts school in Rijeka (Prirodoslovna i graficka skola Rijeka). For 2025 spring phenology campaign students will continue observing the fig tree from previous campaigns. The tree is located in a public park next to the school. The tree is young and overshadowed by another tree. However, the branch we are observing is facing south and is exposed to plenty of sunlight.

GPS coordinates: N 45°20'13" E 14°25'32"
Altitude: 61 m
Latin name of the tree species: Ficus carica

This year we started observations on 15th February 2025. All buds were dormant.

Budburst dates this year are:

Leaf 1: March 18th
Leaf 2: March 20th
Leaf 3: March 20th
Leaf 4: March 23rd

Below are photos of the budburst.

During the Spring 2025 Campaign, we collaborated with Ivan Kukuljević Primary School (Belišće, Croatia).
We used Padlet to track our collaboration: https://padlet.com/doloresdobrinjkic/2025-spring-tree-campaign-collaboration-group-bst9xph6a46tvzl6

The students analysed green-up of both fig trees. The tree in Rijeka had an earlier budburst (mid-March), and the leaves stopped growing earlier (early May). In comparison, the tree in Belišće had a later buburst (early April) and the leaves stopped growing in mid-May.

These differences can can be explained by geographical lattitude, since the Belišće is situated approx. 100 km north in reference to Rijeka.
