This research proposal details a citizen science project focused on the environmental monitoring of the Pericumã River in Pinheiro, Maranhão, Brazil. The study employs the standardized GLOBE hydrosphere protocol to conduct systematic, monthly water quality assessments, measuring key physical-chemical parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, conductivity, and salinity. The primary objectives are to generate a robust, localized dataset to identify spatial and temporal patterns of water quality, thereby assessing the river's health. A core component of the project is the direct involvement of high school students, who will be trained to collect and preliminarily analyze data, transforming them into active citizen scientists. The research investigates the educational impact of this hands-on experience on students' scientific literacy and environmental awareness. Furthermore, it aims to translate the collected evidence into actionable knowledge, seeking to inform and influence local public policies related to sanitation and water resource management. By bridging scientific inquiry, community engagement, and policy advocacy, this project strives to contribute to both environmental stewardship and sustainable development in the region, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for clean water (SDG 6) and quality education (SDG 4).
