Near the Petrinja Secondary School and the Marija Jurić Zagorka Elementary School, there are streams that are not known to the wider community. The local population used them as a recipient of sewage outlets. The awareness of environmental protection has influenced the sustainable attitude of the local community towards stream conservation. Our goal was to use a survey to examine how much students know about their streams and compare the water quality during the winter months. We performed a physico-chemical analysis of water according to GLOBE protocols, which indicated a lower water quality in the Ribarov Stream in Petrinja compared to the Štefanovec Stream in Zagreb, which can also be confirmed by macrozoobenthos analyses. Although the survey showed that students do not know enough about their streams near the school and believe that the streams are burdened with sewage outlets, they still believe that there are living organisms in the streams that can withstand these conditions.
