Abstract High variations in soil types and topography in Chiang Mai Province allow this area to produce many economic plants. However, some plants are intensively grown because of high market demand but ignoring the suitability of soil types and land use leading to unnecessary expense to improve the yield. This study examined the types of soil in selected farm lands following the GLOBE protocol. Land use was evaluated by using Geographic Information System (GIS) and the database from the Department of Land Development. Four study sited were selected, which were a rice paddy, a chrysanthemum farm, a strawberry farm, and a longan orchard. These sites were located in different districts (Amphurs) in Chiang Mai Province. The resulted showed that soil texture in all sites except for the strawberry farm had been changed from previous record from the Department of Land Development. Land use evaluation revealed that the lands used to grow rice and longans were appropriate while the chrysanthemum and strawberry farms were not. Therefore, some approaches must be taken to improve yield in appropriate lands.
