The 2019 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium important dates and rubrics are now available! The GLOBE Clouds team at NASA Langley Research Center would love to see you use cloud observations in your research!
Do you need some ideas? Here are a few. Also, don't forget about the blog on how to come up with a good research question .
K-2nd grade:
- What is the cloud type observed the most during Fall/Spring/Summer (choose one or a different period of time)?
- Which cloud type, nimbostratus or cumulonimbus, produces the most ...

I just updated HoloGLOBE to v1.0.2. For those of you new to this app, HoloGLOBE brings NASA and NOAA visualizations of the Earth to the palm of your hand through augmented reality (AR). You can read more about the app here: http://www.palmyracove.org/InstituteforEarthObservations/HoloGLOBE.aspx
In this latest release, I have added play/pause functionality to the MyNASAData module. The MyNASAData is essentially an augmented reality version of GLOBE's Earth System Poster. In addition the new ICESat-2 module has been added. The ICESat-2 module was built by Emme Wiederhold, a ...

I am hearing more and more conversations center around "bundling," particularly when it comes to NGSS ( Next Generation Science Standards ). Sometimes, in my GLOBE world, it is a conversation around bundling the protocols together. I know that some teachers already do this when they take students outside for field investigations. In my email clean-out, I found this little gem that I thought I'd share.
In 2012, the GLOBE Annual Meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota included two investigation questions for fieldwork. To answer the questions, the participants used several protocols to collect ...

The GLOBE Program is in a unique position to provide citizens worldwide with amazing benefits. One of the biggest benefits, I feel, it that of gaining a larger perspective.
I work at Goddard Space Flight Center with the GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) mission . This Earth-observing satellite is able to measure global precipitation and update these measurements every 30 minutes. You can see the latest data animation for the past week here . As NASA is a key sponsor of The GLOBE Program, many of us who work for NASA are able to share the unique perspectives that ...

The NASA GLOBE Clouds team recently presented a webinar the details of how your cloud observations are matched to satellite data. The webinar, recording found below, also focuses on the importance and quality of the observations, ways that the data can be used by scientists, and current work being done by the team at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. The webinar also highlights newly processed data from the temperature and cloud observations reported for the Great North American Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017.
See how your ...

Mr. Jeff Bouwman
The NASA GLOBE Clouds team is excited to highlight Mr. Jeff Bouwman, a 6th and 7th grade teacher at Shumate Middle School ( Gibraltar School District ) in Gibraltar, MI. Mr. Bouwman was one of the top 10 GLOBE Cloud observers for 2017 and we are very excited for the research his students are doing with the data.
We invite you to read his most recent post - "It's Cool to Have Your Head in the Clouds" - and read the research his students are doing with 2-years of cloud observations!

We are very fortunate to have a collaborative relationship with Dr. Joseph Kerski , the Education Manager from Esri . To advance our work together, he produced a couple short webinars on using GLOBE data in ArcGIS Online and wrote a blog about it too.
His presentation "Collecting, Analyzing and Mapping Field Data" can also be found online here . To find out how you can use ArcGIS (at no cost to your school), Esri is a wealth of information. You can start here: http://www.esri.com/industries/education/schools .

We have all been dismayed to see the extent of the damage done during the recent landslides that occurred after forest fires had destroyed much of the vegetation, and then intense rain caused a horrific landslide to occur in Montecito. You can read more here about how NASA's Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 was able to acquire natural color imagery of the affected region both before and after the landslide occurred, which enables us to observe the impact of this natural disaster on the environment. NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement mission (GPM) measured the ...

The hotel and dorm rooms are being reserved across the country for the United States Regional Student Research Symposia (SRS) . The agendas are roughed out. The speakers are confirming. Students are carrying out GLOBE protocols and analyzing data. Teachers are applying for funding to support team travel (due February 1st).
All of this gives me a chance to think about the students that have attended the SRS the past two years. GLOBE Partnership coordinators, GIO and I have met some incredible students and teachers. We'll be posting their stories for you to read too. The first one ...

As many of us have seen on the news recently , a great many people in southern California were impacted by mudslides last night. We know these dangerous natural disasters occur all over the world. Scientists globally are working hard to be able to better predict these devastating events. You can learn more about the use of NASA's satellite data to detect potential landslides here . I recently attended a hearing for government officials that focused on the increasing danger we face from landslides and mudslides and wrote this blog that summarized many of the ...

The ENSO Phase III Field Measurement Campaign is focusing on “Water in Our Environment” during the 2017-2018 school year. Each month we have a webinar using Zoom, and we like to spotlight a different region each time. Our Feb. 8th spotlight will shine on the Near East and Africa.
On February 8 th , we would like to shine this spotlight on the wonderful GLOBE scientists, teachers, and students from all 13 GLOBE countries in this region. We would therefore like to reach out and invite anyone within the GLOBE Program to consider participating in this webinar. Everyone is invited to ...
