Patchara Pongmanawut , a GLOBE teacher at the Princess Chulabhorn Science High School in the Trang Province in Thailand, has been doing fantastic work with her students. These students have been at the top of the Mosquito Habitat Mapper Honor Roll for the past month, and show no sign of slowing down!
"In Thailand, there are many mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, malaria, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile fever, St. Louis encephalitis, filariasis and Zika", Pongmanawut says. This has really inspired her and her students to go ...

Guiding Investigative Questions for Data Collection and Research
As you take tree height and other measurements as part of the campaign, we would like to offer several questions that you might like to answer. These Guiding Investigative Questions can help you with the "Why am I collecting this data and what does my data mean?
Where are trees growing and why are they there?
What can measuring tree height tell us about our local ecosystem?
What is the relationship between tree height and land cover?
What are the tools for measuring trees and the errors ...

Understanding our planet's forests is vital to helping us gain knowledge about tree canopies, Earth's carbon budget, biomass estimations, among others. Also, knowing how our planet's forests respond to disasters like fires, blight, and natural disasters is an important facet in knowing how our planet responds to change.
Through a combination of satellite and ground-based data collection, the Canadian Forest Service was able to i mprove Canada’s ability to observe, track and study forest disturbances such as wildfires and insect infestations, and how quickly forests grow back after ...

The NASA Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) launched from Vandenberg AFB on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 6:02am PDT.
On September 30, 2018, ICESat-2 fired its first laser and on October 3, NASA received the first height measurements from the satellite.
A visualization of ICESat-2 data, called a photon cloud, shows the first set of height measurements from the satellite, taken as it orbited over the Antarctic ice sheet. Each blue dot represents a photon detected by the ATLAS instrument. This photon cloud shows the elevation measured by photons in ...

I just updated HoloGLOBE to v1.0.2. For those of you new to this app, HoloGLOBE brings NASA and NOAA visualizations of the Earth to the palm of your hand through augmented reality (AR). You can read more about the app here: http://www.palmyracove.org/InstituteforEarthObservations/HoloGLOBE.aspx
In this latest release, I have added play/pause functionality to the MyNASAData module. The MyNASAData is essentially an augmented reality version of GLOBE's Earth System Poster. In addition the new ICESat-2 module has been added. The ICESat-2 module was built by Emme Wiederhold, a ...

Greetings from NASA and the ICESat-2 Satellite Mission,
As you may know, the NASA Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) will launch from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on September 15, 2018. ICESat-2 will be a satellite that will use an on-board laser system to measure the height of Earth’s ice, trees, oceans, geographic features, among others.
For several days before the launch, the ICESat-2 Outreach Team will be conducting many pre-launch activities, near the launch site, that showcase the ICESat-2 Mission. One of these events, in ...

As you may know, the NASA Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) will launch on September 15, 2018 from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA. The ICESat-2 satellite will use an on-board laser altimeter system to measure the height of Earth. Measurements of ice sheets, sea ice, bodies of water, mountains are all part of what ICESat-2 will measure.
For our collaboration with The GLOBE Program, we want to focus on one exciting variable that the ICESat-2 satellite will measure, TREE HEIGHT! GLOBE has several ways to measure tree height. You can find them ...

Are you taking GLOBE water quality measurements as part of the ENSO Student Research Campaign? If so, please consider joining the new GLOBE Water Quality Collaboration Group (GWQCG) .
Led by Bob Connick, GLOBE schools from across the world are taking water quality measurements that help explore one of the ENSO Campaign's Guiding Investigative Questions, "What is the quality of water in our environment?"
By learning all about the water quality measurements in a local setting, one can learn just how these local measurements helps us understand the global picture of water ...

We had a fabulous webinar this afternoon in which students in both North America and South America shared their work on using GLOBE protocols to learn more about water in their environment. Meriam Kalloe, the GLOBE Assistant Country Coordinator for Suriname, brought together many students from Anton Resida Middle School who shared information on their use of several GLOBE hydrology protocols to study the quality of water in three locations near their school. They plan to continue to monitor the quality of the water in those three sites. Then Jeff Bouwman's middle school students ...

The ENSO Phase III Field Measurement Campaign is focusing on “Water in Our Environment” during the 2017-2018 school year. Each month we have a webinar using Zoom, and we like to spotlight a different region each time. Our Feb. 8th spotlight will shine on the Near East and Africa.
On February 8 th , we would like to shine this spotlight on the wonderful GLOBE scientists, teachers, and students from all 13 GLOBE countries in this region. We would therefore like to reach out and invite anyone within the GLOBE Program to consider participating in this webinar. Everyone is invited to ...

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a hearing entitled " Gravity Never Sleeps: Landslide Risk Across the Country "at the Rayburn House Office Building that was intended to inform our lawmakers and government officials about the impacts of landslides in many parts of the United States. As the topic is related to our guiding investigative question for the ENSO Student Research Campaign - " What impacts does water, above and below ground, have on our environment? ", I thought I would share some of the things that I learned.

By Olawale Oluwafemi (Femi), (Nigerian Space Agency) and DeStaerke Danielle (CNES)
The primary objective of every research project is not only about what you discover but also how do you communicate your discoveries to the interested audience. Delivering either a poster or oral presentation at a scientific meeting is not an easy task, but my passionate friend Danielle and I will present tips that will assist GLOBE Students and Teachers to deliver good scientific presentations.

Gathering data
Once you have determined what protocols to use for your project, you will need to develop a plan for gathering the data. It might consist of using automated data collection or making your own measurements. Also, it may include finding data taken by others, such as when you compare your observations with those of another GLOBE school.
Automated Data Collection
If you are using an automated data collection device or devices, verify that the data are being recorded properly before your official testing timeframe. You will want to monitor that the data are being ...

Sometimes, actually most of the time, I forget to be grateful for the fact that I have easy access to clean freshwater. When Thanksgiving rolls around each year, I try to step back and consider the many things I have to be thankful for. Day after day I work with the amazing science team behind the Global Precipitation Measurement mission, and I never cease to be completely amazed at how technology has enabled us to monitor our home planet.
During our last ENSO Phase III webinar, we learned about water quality in Europe from several GLOBE scientists, teachers, and students ...
