GLOBE Estonia: Learning Expedition 2025 Brings Young Researchers to Jõulumäe

On 16–19 August, the GLOBE Estonia Learning Expedition took place in Jõulumäe, bringing together nearly 100 members of the GLOBE community from Estonia along with guests from Limbaži, Latvia. Over 4 days, participants explored the diverse natural environment of Jõulumäe, carried out measurements based on GLOBE protocols, and reflected on the role of science and environmental education.

This was not the first time Jõulumäe hosted a GLOBE expedition—similar events were held 7 and 14 years ago. A distinctive focus of this year’s expedition was on observing change; the data collected was compared with earlier results to gain a better understanding of the region’s development and environmental dynamics.

The first day introduced students to GLOBE protocols and provided opportunities for initial hands-on measurements. An evening program of games and presentations encouraged participants to build friendships and exchange experiences from their schools’ GLOBE activities.

The highlight of the second day was a field research excursion. Student groups developed research plans, conducted outdoor measurements under the guidance of mentors, and later heard an inspiring lecture by Tallinn University researcher Jaanus Terasmaa, who shared insights into the work and mission of a scientist.

On the third day, attention turned to data analysis. Teams prepared research reports, created video presentations, and took part in GLOBE games that helped consolidate knowledge and strengthen teamwork skills. The day concluded with creative role-plays on the theme “Where is Pluto?(Teams were named after planets)

The final day featured the screening of student videos, a GLOBE quiz testing attention and knowledge, and a concluding panel discussion. Participants reflected on what they had learned, discussed environmental changes in the region, and explored the role of students in scientific data collection and personal observation in the age of artificial intelligence.

The learning expedition ended in a spirit of friendship and inspiration. Participants left Jõulumäe with new knowledge, experiences, and ideas for collaboration, all of which will support both their personal development and the shared goals of the GLOBE community.
