GLOBE Jordan: Communities Collaborate to Bring GLOBE to Al-Amal School for the Deaf

Students posing behind decorated frame. The GLOBE team at King Abdullah II School for Excellence – Zarqa recently partnered with Al-Amal School for the Deaf to promote environmental awareness among students with special needs. Guided by teacher Ruba Hapapkh, the GLOBE Jordan team held an introductory session where presenters discussed the GLOBE Program’s goals, Earth spheres, and protocols. Event leaders then led a dialogue on how human behaviors impact the environment, followed by interactive educational games. Students from both schools engaged with joy and curiosity. Hapapkh remarked, “This experience showed how GLOBE can be a tool for inclusive education and mutual understanding.”

This partnership was important because environmental education is important for all, including students with hearing disabilities. The goal was to bridge the gap and make science accessible to a wider community. Seeing the enthusiasm of the students and their eagerness to learn made this initiative deeply rewarding. Students gained a better understanding of the challenges faced by the Deaf community, whereas Al-Amal students were introduced to citizen science through GLOBE and expressed their excitement to join the program.

Students who participated in the event noted the following:

I loved learning about the environment through games. I want to be part of GLOBE! — Student from Al-Amal School

We learned how to communicate better and understand our peers’ experiences. Science brought us together. — Student from King Abdullah II School
