GLOBE Oman: Students Participate in Third Winter Astronomy Camp

The Ibri Basic Education School in the Dhahirah Governate of Oman implemented its third Astronomy Camp on 7 January 2026 to promote observation-based learning and scientific investigation, and linking scientific concepts to the Earth system and the local environment. The event was implemented by the school’s GLOBE team, in cooperation with the science team and activities specialist. The camp supported the pillars of the GLOBE Program by introducing participants to the components of the Earth system, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere (land cover). The science cinema screened a documentary illustrating the relationship between Earth and space.

The camp enhanced the scientific thinking skills of the students and children who attended, and encouraged applied learning and direct observation, in alignment with the GLOBE Program's philosophy of engaging students in environmental and space sciences. The event also contributed to expanding the scope of community participation in GLOBE activities through the various programs carried out during the camp, including determining Earth's geographic directions using stars, observing the effect of aerosols and particles on the atmosphere, and the relationship between the tilt of Earth's axis and the changing position of stars and how that relationship affects temperature and humidity data.

Various community institutions participated to support GLOBE Program initiatives, such as the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs; the Directorate General of Agriculture and Water Resources; the esteemed engineer Abdullah Al-Farsi, who has an interest in astronomy; and the school's Female Students' Parents Council. This collaboration aimed to spread scientific awareness related to the environment and applied sciences and to support the program's mission of linking science education to real-world practices and the local community.
