GLOBE Oman: Students Build Scientific Skills and Environmental Awareness Through Rainfall Monitoring

Rainfall monitoring

On 6 January 2026, the GLOBE Environmental Team at Sumayyah Post-Basic Education School conducted a rainfall monitoring activity in Safalat Ibra as part of the GLOBE Program. The local climate is generally semi-arid throughout the year, with relatively low annual rainfall. Precipitation mainly occurs during specific seasons due to weather systems or occasional tropical conditions. Therefore, rainfall monitoring is especially important for understanding climate variability and its impact on the local environment.

During the activity, students collected, analyzed, and uploaded accurate data to the GLOBE platform.

Students followed the official GLOBE rainfall measurement protocol. Using a standard rain gauge to measure daily precipitation amounts, they recorded their observations in designated data sheets and compared them with previous records to analyze changes. They placed the rain gauge in an open area away from obstacles and took measurements at the same time each day to ensure data accuracy.

Students used a field data logbook to document measurements, the GLOBE data entry platform/app, a thermometer to relate rainfall amounts to prevailing temperatures, and location tools to accurately document the observation site. This experience strengthened students’ confidence and sense of scientific responsibility.

One participating student shared:

“We learned that every number we record can contribute to a broader understanding of the weather in our region. We now look forward to rainfall so we can carefully record our measurements.”

Our participation in the GLOBE Program began through our school’s initiatives to promote scientific and environmental activities. We were introduced to the program and its objectives and encouraged to supervise the GLOBE environmental team. We worked on training students in environmental monitoring and scientific data collection, which helped strengthen the culture of research and inquiry within the school.

The GLOBE Program has contributed significantly to developing our skills in scientific supervision, planning field activities, analyzing environmental data, and integrating technology into teaching. It also helped us apply project-based learning strategies and connect school curricula with practical applications, which positively impacted students’ academic performance.

GLOBE has made learning more interactive and effective through hands-on activities, fieldwork, and collaborative projects. It has enhanced students’ research skills, critical thinking, and environmental awareness, while also linking education to sustainability issues.

Through our involvement in the GLOBE Program, we have focused on empowering students academically, developing their research capabilities, promoting environmental responsibility, and contributing to the preparation of a creative and knowledgeable generation in STEM fields.
