From Eyesore to Eden: New York City GLOBE Schools Monitor Historic Conversion of Landfills to Parkland
For decades, garbage trucks deposited New York City's waste in two large landfills adjacent to Jamaica Bay on the south shore of Brooklyn and Queens just minutes from John F. Kennedy International Airport. The combined 400-acre Pennsylvania Avenue/Fountain Avenue landfill site was a local eyesore, to say nothing of its effects on the nose and throat, and requited Superfund cleanup that began in the late 1980s. Today, years of renovation work by the New York City (NYC) Department of Environmental Protection and New York State (NYS) Department of Environmental Conservation are nearing the goal of converting these former environmental disasters to a remarkable park that will be turned over to the National Park Service, Gateway National Recreation Area, for the enjoyment of all New Yorkers.

Denver/Ulanbataar Sister Cities School Pairing Project Enhanced with GLOBE
The Denver / Ulanbataar Sister Cities school collaboration project was begun in 2005 to establish an educational and cultural exchange between high school students in Colorado and Mongolia. The organization paired Denver Center for International Studies in Denver and Tuba City Boarding School in Tuba City, Arizona, with Ireedui Tsogtsolbor (Future Complex) in Ulanbataar and Erdmiin Dalai Tsogtsolbor (Ocean Knowledge Complex) in Mandalgovi, Mongolia. Each of the four schools established a student club to learn about the other's culture, history and geography, and focused on establishing communication between the schools so that students could interact online.

Green Down of a Tree in Iowa
At the MFL Mar-Mac Elementary School in Monona, Iowa, USA, Crystal Thurn's 3rd grade class spent three months last year studying seasonal change by doing a research project that took them outside their classroom on beautiful crisp days last Autumn. The project required that the students closely observe one maple tree in the schoolyard to see what factors might affect the tree as it changed color and dropped its leaves.
