New GLOBE teachers and students in Laredo, Texas can't wait for school to begin. In fact, they're not! Students and teachers have been working together at a special camp this summer to master the GLOBE protocols so they will be ready to begin reporting data at the start of the new school year.

GLOBE Stars in the Czech Republic
Nearly 200 students from 20 GLOBE schools throughout the Czech Republic participated in the country's second GLOBE Games April 9-11, 1999. At the opening ceremony in Telc, a Dixieland band played and participants sang Czech GLOBE songs composed at the 1998 GLOBE Games.

Burlington County Institute Of Technology, Medford, NJ, United States
Recognizing that students also make good teachers, a new education center in Smithville, New Jersey is recruiting GLOBE students to help increase environmental awareness in the community. GLOBE students from the Burlington County Institute for Technology will volunteer at the Environmental Studies Center, teaching the GLOBE protocols to students visiting the center from area schools.

Pusan Science High School, Pusan, Korea, South
Students at Pusan Science High School are using their GLOBE data to learn more about local environmental conditions and to raise the environmental awareness of students throughout their city, the second largest in Korea. Since January 1997, the students have reported nearly 2,000 observations spanning all the GLOBE measurement areas.

Ecopolis Center Junior Eco Club, Tokyo, Japan
GLOBE students at the Itabashi GLOBE Club in Tokyo, Japan are making headlines by demonstrating how young people can collaborate around the world to increase our understanding of the Earth environment. The students gather on weekends and after school at the Ecopolis Center to make GLOBE measurements and to communicate with other schools worldwide using GLOBEMail.

Pine Elementary/Junior High School, Mountain Home, ID, United States
Imagine walking out your school doors into the middle of a thick forest with bears, bobcats, deer and elk possibly roaming nearby. It may seem unusual, but it's just another day at Pine Elementary and Junior High School - a one-room school house for students of all ages located 60 miles from the nearest town in Idaho.

Jones Valley Elementary School
In Huntsville, Alabama, second and fifth graders are learning about how sophisticated satellite imagery and hands-on GLOBE measurements work together to provide a better understanding of local and global environmental features. On Earth Day 1999, students from Jones Valley Elementary and Williams Elementary School joined researchers from the Global Hydrology and Climate Center (GHCC) for a day of learning and fun.

GLOBE Stars in Australia
The GLOBE Program in Australia is taking full advantage of both print and electronic media to keep up with the more than 200 schools now participating in GLOBE. With this strong support at the national level, Australian students have reported more than 94,000 measurements in atmosphere, land cover/biology, soils, and hydrology.

Liceo Scientifico Majorana, Moncalieri, Italy
Demonstrating the multi-disciplinary nature of the GLOBE Program, teachers at the Liceo Scientifico Majorana school in Italy have incorporated GLOBE into physics, science, philosophy and foreign language classes. Under the energetic guidance of GLOBE teacher Giovanni Imbalzano, the school has also incorporated GLOBE into a science project for disabled students.
