Changes to GLOBE Accounts, My Pages, and Training Planned for 19 December
This week, GLOBE will begin implementing the first of the upcoming changes to new GLOBE accounts, My Pages, and training requirements. These changes go into effect starting 19 December. Changes to organization creation and Trainer/Mentor Trainers will be implemented at a later date. Details are below.
New GLOBE.gov Accounts: For anyone signing up to join GLOBE, there will be one account option (formerly we offered Citizen Scientists, Educator/Teachers, and Students 13+ account types). This will not impact existing users. For new users creating accounts, the process for account creation will become simpler and quicker.
My Pages: Biographical information will no longer be available on My Pages. The new My Page will now feature user observations. My Pages will offer a new tab to access Guest accounts. All users will be able to create up to 10 Guest accounts (formerly called Student accounts).
Accessing Existing Student Accounts: Existing Educator/Teacher account users will have access to their Student accounts through their My Page, under Guest Accounts.”. These existing users will still have access to 30+ Guest accounts. The functionality of Guest accounts is the same as Student accounts.
Posting Blogs and Collaborating through GLOBE Friends: The ability to post blogs and to collaborate using GLOBE Friends will no longer be available.
New Training Requirements: GLOBE members will need to complete a training in each protocol for which they plan to upload data. There are four training options (complete one for each protocol you plan to enter data for):
- Review the Field Guide.
- Complete a Data Collection eTraining (New! Available for some protocols only). Upon completion, you will receive a virtual badge.
- Complete a full Protocol eTraining and Protocol Self-Assessment Test. Upon completion of the assessment test, your training records on GLOBE.gov will be updated.
- Attend an in-person or virtual GLOBE workshop.
The Introduction to GLOBE training will be optional. Before starting a protocol-specific training, we encourage users to complete the Introduction trainings for the corresponding sphere (Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Pedosphere), but all sphere introduction trainings will be optional.
This change in training requirements means that ALL USERS (including former Citizen Scientist accounts) will now have access to protocols beyond the GLOBE Observer protocols as long as they complete the appropriate training(s).
