Upcoming Changes to GLOBE
Due to reductions in staffing, GLOBE will be implementing the following changes to GLOBE website accounts, My Pages, organizations, and training by the end of 2025. These changes will go into effect between 15 December and 1 January. Details are below.
If you have questions about any of the changes outlined below, please attend an information session.
Upcoming Changes to GLOBE Accounts, My Pages, and Organizations
Changes to New GLOBE Accounts: GLOBE will change from three account types (Citizen Scientists, Teachers/Educators, Students 13+) to one account type. The process for account creation will be simplified to three quick steps. This change applies to new account creation only; existing accounts will remain the same.
Change to My Pages: Biographical information, the ability to post blogs, and the ability to collaborate using GLOBE Friends will no longer be available on GLOBE.gov. The new My Page will feature user observations in a "My Observations" tab. All users will be able to create up to 10 guest accounts. Guest accounts offer the same functionality as student accounts. Existing student account information will be stored under “Guest Accounts,” and existing Teacher/Educator accounts will still have access to 30 guest accounts.
Changes to Organization Creation: Existing accounts (and their data) will continue to be affiliated with their existing organizations. As of 2026, users will no longer be able to create new organizations. New users (and their data) will be associated with their country's citizen science organization.
Upcoming Changes to GLOBE Training Requirements
GLOBE training requirements will become much simpler: GLOBE members will need to complete a training in each protocol they plan to use.
There are four training options (complete one for each protocol you plan to enter data for):
- Review the Field Guide.
- Complete a Data Collection eTraining (New! Available for some protocols only). Upon completion, you will receive a virtual badge.
- Complete a full Protocol eTraining and Protocol Self-Assessment Test. Upon completion of the assessment test, your training records on GLOBE.gov will be updated.
- Attend an in-person or virtual GLOBE workshop.
Introduction to GLOBE will become an optional training. We encourage users to complete the Introduction to that sphere (Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, and/or Pedosphere) before starting a protocol-specific training, but these are also optional.
This change in training requirements means that ALL USERS (including former Citizen Scientist accounts) will now have access to try protocols beyond the GLOBE Observer protocols as long as they do the training.
Trainer/Mentor Trainers
There will no longer be a mechanism for applying to be a trainer or mentor trainer. Existing trainers and mentor trainers will maintain their status.
