GLOBE Mauritius Educators Find Success at Training Workshop
GLOBE Mauritius recently successfully completed an
Educator Training Workshop from 18–25 June. The training was attended
by GLOBE Africa Regional Country Coordinator Mr. Mark Brettenny and
his wife Mrs. Rogeline Brettenny. The event also included a
presentation from the members of the U.S. Embassy.

The first visit was scheduled at Piton State College. An assembly, led by the Rector of the school, Mrs. Yash Jeetoo, was held to present Mr. and Mrs. Brettenny to students. Mr. Brettenny and Country Coordinator Mrs. Shalini Mahadowa Reechaye both addressed the assembly. During this event, GLOBE educator Dr. Patrick Bernard Gabriel Long explained about the projects that have been carried out as well as ongoing projects. Following these talks, an exhibition was organized in the science laboratories where GLOBE students presented their project on urban surface heat temperature, which they had carried out in collaboration with GLOBE Ireland. They also shared their ongoing project on mosquito habitat, in which they are using equipment received through a YLACES grant.
Thursday 19 and Monday 23 June
Educator training workshops were held at Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC). Educators from 26 secondary schools, including some private secondary schools that have just joined the project. Four representatives of RGSC and one representative from each of the four Zonal Directorates of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource also attended the workshop. Director of RGSC Dr. Aman Kumar Maulloo, Mrs. Mahadowa Reechaye and Mr. Brettenny addressed the audience for the official opening of the workshop. Topics discussed in the workshop and some highlights included:
- GLOBE protocols
- How to use the GLOBE website and do GLOBE activities
- Dr. Hamid Soleiman made a virtual presentation on the International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS)
- Country Coordinator Mr. Ylliass Lalwani from GLOBE Benin presented on GLOBE alumni activities and opportunities
- Experience sharing by GLOBE educators:
- Mr. Rajiv Aubeeluck, the educator who had supervised the GLOBE team whose IVSS project was selected for African region.
- Mr. Bernard Long, who has received equipment from YLACES, talked about his ongoing project on mosquito habitat. He also talked about his collaboration with GLOBE Ireland on the urban surface temperature project.
During the trainings, participants were divided into groups to work out a SWOT analysis on the GLOBE Program. Each participant also provided their proposed way forward regarding the GLOBE Program. At the end of the workshop, a ceremony was organized to award the certificates to participants in the presence of the following representatives from the U.S. Embassy:

A school visit was organized at Pamplemousses State Secondary School where the GLOBE team had worked on the IVSS project selected for the African region. An assembly was organized with the students and staff of the school. The program included:
- Address by the school Rector Mrs. Mookith
- Address by the GLOBE educators
- Address by the GLOBE Africa Regional Coordinator Mr. Brettenny
- Address by the Mauritius Country Coordinator Mrs. Mahadowa Reechaye
- Presentation on the IVSS project “Observing Variations in Growth of Mangroves at Roches Noires Lagoon” by GLOBE students
- Presentation of shields to GLOBE students and educator
