Climate Resilience - Temperature and Trees

The GLOBE Ireland Climate Resilience - Temperature and Trees campaign aims to educate students about the interconnection of our built and natural environments, highlighting how what their schools are made of can affect the local temperatures. This is done through exploration of the ‘Urban Heat Island Effect' and the role that trees play in controlling temperatures.

During this campaign, students explore and measure two things:

  • The height and trunk size of trees to estimate their carbon storage.

  • The temperature of different surfaces in their schools to see how different materials affect the local temperature.

Campaign Timeline

The monitoring period for this campaign starts in October, with students measuring trees between October and March. Monitoring of the surface temperatures will be done during the months of October, December and/or March. Schools can choose to monitor cloud cover and weather during these months as well. Schools may choose to monitor during any or all of these months.

Optional monitoring of tree ‘Green Down’ and ‘Green Up’ can be carried out in October/November and March/April, respectively.

Activities

  1. Twice daily surface temperature readings.
  2. Tree height and circumference measurements.
  3. Measurement of Green Up and Green Down (Optional).
  4. Creation of Action Plan to make your school more resilient to climate change (Optional).
  5. Project sharing webinar (Optional).

FAQs

It is difficult to tell the exact amount of time needed, but we estimate that teachers will need about 45 mins a week to measure surface temperature. If teachers do our complimentary lessons and other activities, then it will take up more time. It is completely up to the teachers how much extra time they can and want to invest besides the minimum required to collect data.

Twice a week (on any day you choose) during your chosen month/s of monitoring.

Only one. But if you have time, we recommend that you do more!

Anytime between October 2025 and March 2026. We recommend that you choose a tree in early October, when native trees still have leaves that make them identifiable.

This and other GLOBE Ireland campaigns are free to the schools that signed up in the Republic of Ireland. We only have a limited number of spots per campaign, so ensure you sign up before the spots are filled.

Our resources are free to use by anyone, so teachers can use them and our protocols and work at your own pace and on your own timeline. You will however need to acquire the necessary equipment yourself. If you are in the Republic of Ireland, contact us to let us know that you are interested. We will see if we can assist you in any way.
