The GLOBE Program Kicks Off in Georgia on Earth Day
With the purpose of officially opening The GLOBE Program in Georgia, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed online between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia and CENN, the major non-governmental organization in the country on 22 April, Earth Day. The memorandum was signed by the Minister, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, and by CENN Executive Director, Nana Janashia.
The participants of the online conference were presented with a welcome speech by Ambassador Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria in Georgia, Arad Benko, who discussed the importance of The GLOBE Program implementation in Georgia. The program will be implemented with financial support from the Austrian Development Cooperation.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli said: “It is rather emblematic that the foundation was laid for initiation of an extremely important program in Georgia on International Earth Day. For this, I would like to extend special thanks to Austrian Development Cooperation, NASA and CENN. The GLOBE Program covers very interesting topics, the knowledge of which, I believe, is essential for every educated person. It should also be noted that the online tools provided by the GLOBE will eventually enable us to cover all schools in Georgia. Online education is a highly relevant issue in the time of global pandemic. I am confident that program implementation will be a great success.”
Georgia Country Coordinator, the CENN, is a non-governmental organisation working to protect the environment through fostering sustainable development throughout the South Caucasus. They specialize in a number of areas, including combating climate change, sustainable management of resources, building and developing healthy and prosperous climate resilient communities, and empowering women and girls to participate in creating inclusive solutions. The GLOBE Program is being implemented in the scope of the CENN-ADC project “Promoting Sustainable Forest Management For Climate Resilient Rural Development In Georgia.”
The plan is that by the end of the next academic year, 10 schools will have been trained to participate in the program. Any teacher willing to do so, will be able to use the instructional modules and the educational materials. Implementation of a successful international environmental education platform in Georgia will support: creating broad opportunities for science and educational practice at public and private schools; connecting successful schools and people with international programs; creating new academic knowledge and preparing information resources; raising public awareness on global and local environmental challenges and ways of addressing them.
