Ideas to Celebrate Earth Day with GLOBE
Apr 15, 2026
Earth Day is coming right up. If you’re looking for an easy way to celebrate using GLOBE protocols and activities, check out some ideas from U.S. GLOBE Partners.
GLOBE Protocols, Activities, and Data
- Find a tree or shrub and take a Green-up measurement. Continue measuring with the North American Phenology Campaign until the leaves have stopped growing!
- Measure tree height with a clinometer and the GLOBE Observer App’s Trees Tool and compare your measurements.
- Study the Earth as a system at your local study site using the activities Connecting the Parts of the Study Site and Representing the Study Site in a Diagram.
- Using the GLOBE database, look back in time at your location: Has it ever snowed on Earth Day?
Elementary GLOBE
- Read the Elementary GLOBE storybook All About Earth: Our World on Stage, sing the Earth System Song (in the storybook), or have your own production of the Earth System Play.
- Read the GLOBE Book The Mystery of the Missing Hummingbirds. Check Hummingbird Central to find out if the hummingbirds have returned to your area.
Other GLOBE-Related Fun
- Watch and listen to the GLOBE Poem.
- Have fun with wind:
- Measure wind speed with different instruments and compare your measurements to your preferred weather site. How does location and topography affect wind speed?
- Go fly a kite! Can you design different kites for different wind conditions?
- Check out this global map of wind at Earth’s surface.
- Search for macroinvertebrates and submit pictures to the MacroBlitz Project on iNaturalist. [Learn more about MacroBlitz, started by GLOBE Partner Anne Lewis.]
