Join summer campers from over 30 camps across the United States as they collect air temperature, soil temperature, surface temperature, and water temperature study over the next two months. Campers will explore relationships between each of the GLOBE temperature protocols as they monitor differences across various microclimates found within their camp and community. Each camp will have the opportunity to explore data being collected by other GLOBE Camps and members of the GLOBE community (that's you!), expanding their understanding of data ...

In the Toledo area, Dr. C and schools in the area focused on studying artificial turf versus grass soccer and football fields. Artificial turf was much warmer than natural grass. This is combining the GLOBE Urban Heat Island Field Study with research by Vasco Mantas from the University of Coimbra in Portugal and George Xian from the USGS Eros Data Center and the AREN Project with Andy Henry and Geoff Bland.

You can see that the artificial turf of the football field (called the Glass Bowl) and the ...

The ICESat-2 Satellite will launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California on Saturday, September 15, 2016. At this time, the Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign will officially begin.
If you happen to find yourself in Lompoc, California for the launch, please take a look at this Explore Lompoc web site. It provides some great information about all the ICESat-2 launch activities that will be happening. We also have an ICESat-2 Launch Outreach page that showcases launch information and a launch party kit.

The NASA GLOBE Clouds team is excited to highlight Mr. Gary Popiolkowski, a middle school science teacher at Chartiers-Houston Jr./Sr. High School in Houston, PA, USA. Mr. Popiolkowski has been teaching for 44 years and has been a GLOBE teacher since 1995. He has had his students doing cloud observations for the past 18 years, submitting over 15,000 observations! He has also been doing virtual connections with Patumwan Demonstration School in Thailand each year for the past four years.
We ask Mr. Popiolkowski how he does it! Here is what he shared:
Each period of the day the ...

Sixth Grade Citizen Scientists at Shumate Middle School ( Gibraltar Sc hool District ) in Gibraltar, Michigan (United States of America) truly enjoy observing clouds and taking environmental measurements for The GLOBE Program. Over the course of the school year, each sixth grader will have the opportunity to travel outside to take various environmental measurements. Currently, our sixth grade students are measuring soil moisture, soil, surface, and current temperatures, precipitation, and clouds. While taking surface temperature measurements, students are ...
In my previous blog post, I showed the results of my surface temperature experiment. It was a great way to highlight some of the practical ways to use science, and it was yet another way for me to talk about my puppy. My experiment and accompanying blog was straightforward enough. I identified a problem, I designed an experiment, collected data, and presented the results. This is how science is done, right?! With years of experiment experience behind me, this should have been a very fast and easy task, but I had one problem that I forgot to account for, my Attention Deficit Disorder. ...

These are the results from my surface temperature experiment that I discussed in my previous blog post (same title, part 1).
Results and Conclusion :
Figure 2: Graph of average surface temperatures of the three surfaces over three days including air temperature data lines.
My results show that my hypothesis was half right (remember, it’s ok if your data results do not match your hypothesis!). During the day, asphalt was the hottest, concrete was in the middle, and grass was the coolest. The surface temperatures of all three dropped at night, however, I was ...

VIRTUAL SCIENCE FAIR
In case you missed it, last month, was all about the 2017 International Virtual Science Symposium . There were over 140 entries from all 6 GLOBE regions. Students submitted reports about their research on all of the “spheres” (hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, pedosphere, and earth as a system) and they were reviewed by a panel of scientists, teachers, and science enthusiasts to be rewarded with stars and badges.
I had the wonderful privilege of being able to read through and review several projects. I was blown away with the thought and hard work that went into these ...
