Have you ever wondered why NASA has chosen to follow water ? NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured the distinct signature of water outside our solar system. NASA's Artemis program is examining the presence of water on the Moon in advance of sending and establishing a sustainable human presence there. The answer is simple - water is key to life as we know it, including on planet Earth. Only 2.5% of the water on Earth is fresh, and only a tiny fraction of that is available for use. NASA and other space agencies’ remote sensing satellites provide vital information to ...

What motivated you to volunteer as a NASA citizen scientist? How did you learn about NASA citizen science?
Well ,I learned about NASA citizen science when I participated in the 2020 (STEM). Due to my experiences with mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease as a Sri Lankan, I decided to join the Mosquito Mappers team, where part of the was collecting and analyzing GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper and GLOBE Observer Clouds citizen science data. I saw opportunities to utilize my interest in programming to automate certain tasks that made the data we were using more accessible and easier to ...

The Summer 2022 NASA SEES Internship program was a memorable one for the GLOBE Mission EARTH (GME) Team! The 6-week period of hard work, commitment, and dedication by all members led to creative and outstanding research projects from both the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) and the Air Quality Initiative (AQI) Teams. The wide geographical spread of the NASA SEES students allows them to take observations using different GLOBE protocols across the United States.
The AQI Team led by GLOBE Mission EARTH Research Assistant Sara Mierzwiak and GME Teacher Janene Smith mentored a group of 7 ...

Hoping to see you at the GLOBE Annual Meeting next week! Loving the session choices and our team has divided up so we can cover them all.
The U.S. Partner session is on Monday afternoon from 3-5pm ET/1-3pm PT (we will end earlier than that, promise!). Our team will share NARM, SRS, and Yearbook news, we will hear from GPO, and announce two RFPs. We will breakout with a couple Jamboard sessions (you know we have fun at those) and end with a Waterfall Chat. A Waterfall Chat might be my new favorite Zoom technique, well, maybe second favorite - I’ll use another one during ...

Happy Friday!
Were you wondering about the lack of posts the last few weeks? I was spending some time in the Adirondacks (NY) with my family the week before July 4th and last week I was in Estes Park, CO with the GLOBE and Earth Systems Science Collaboratives . I encourage you to check out their pages for more information about the 7 groups of GLOBE Partnerships and their regional and cross-regional partners. They are doing great work and the discussions were lively around how they could better work together to reach a broader audience of youth, educators and families, leveraging ...

The GLOBE Program, through its various platforms such as the International Virtual Student Symposium (IVSS), Student Research Symposium (SRS), Regional Meetings has always highlighted relevant student research accomplishments and outputs. The GLOBE activities, however, are not just limited to students and teachers. We are pleased to know that retired professionals can also work and contribute meaningfully to the GLOBE database as citizen scientists. Let us get to know one cloud enthusiast from India, Om Prakash Gupta.
Om Prakash Gupta is one of the most active citizen scientists that ...

We’ve been posting alot of news stories lately and making them more interesting with pictures. Alicia discovered that when she was adding alt text to the images, it was changing them all to the same alt text. This isn’t a great thing to have happen and we reported it to GLOBE . In the meantime, Haley found a workaround to the problem so take a look at this short video if you are planning on posting a story with pictures and alt text in the near future.

Teachers of Kindergarten to Grade 2 can use stories and observations of nature outside your door to help students understand how the systems of Earth (atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and pedosphere) are connected.
Start by reading the Elementary GLOBE story “ All About Earth: Our World on Stage ” to get an overview of some of the connections between the components of the Earth. The story follows a classroom of students as they prepare a play to learn how Earth’s processes are interconnected and how living creatures interact with those processes. [One 30- to 45-minute class ...

I made this notebook because I wanted to make a better list of GLOBE schools with many measurements. At first, I tried to look at official metrics ( https://www.globe.gov/about/impact-and-metrics/schools-with-many-measurements ). Unfortunately, the number of data there was different from the number on official schools pages.
I asked for an explanation on the GLOBE forum, and I got the following response:
> "Different areas of the website count measurements differently. Some places count the number of rows of data across several database tables. Other places count ...

GLOBE completed another great month of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Intensive Observation Period (IOP) in March 2022. 107 schools participated and took a total of 1699 observations throughout the month. It is great to see more and more schools becoming active in this very important project. UHI is becoming more and more important around the world. Saudia Arabia, Croatia, Greece and Taiwan had many schools take observations during March. I am so grateful for the participation of all of the students and teachers and the great work they have done. I would really like to encourage all of the ...

Shortly after 03:30 GMT on Monday, Earth's orbit meant that for several minutes our planet was positioned directly between the Sun and the Moon.
In that time the Moon fell completely into Earth's shadow - temporarily turning it a dusky shade of dark red.
Its hue was created by sunlight being projected through Earth's atmosphere onto the Moon's shadowed surface.
The lunar eclipse coincided with a separate event - a super Moon. This is when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit and so appears larger than usual.
Those watching out for the resulting super blood ...
