Recognizing that students also make good teachers, a new education center in Smithville, New Jersey is recruiting GLOBE students to help increase environmental awareness in the community. GLOBE students from the Burlington County Institute for Technology will volunteer at the Environmental Studies Center, teaching the GLOBE protocols to students visiting the center from area schools.
"This program is a unique opportunity to get hands-on reinforcement of what studying the environment in the 21st Century is all about, that is, having a full understanding of environmental issues, science, and applications of technology," reported GLOBE Teacher John D. Moore. Mr. Moore, who was recently honored as the 1998 Conservation Teacher of the Year, said the center activities will reinforce the New Jersey Environmental Education goals, Core Science Standards, and the National Science Standards."
In April 1999, GLOBE students participated in the official opening of the Center along with state and local officials and the Burlington County Institute of Technology Superintendent Dr. Walter Rudder. In June 1999, GLOBE students also had an opportunity to showcase their GLOBE activities for local residents a the Burlington County Earth Fair, hosted by the Smithville Center.
In the future, the Environmental Studies Center plans to showcase the educational uses of environmental technologies such as Global Positioning Systems, Geographic Information Systems and satellite imaging,
