GLOBE Europe and Eurasia: Countries Collaborate Across the Region to Study Air Quality
An ongoing collaboration within the GLOBE Europe and
Eurasia Air Quality Group has been bringing together committed
educators and experts from Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Malta,
and Slovakia. Through this partnership—formed during the 2022 GLOBE
Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting in Omiš, Croatia—the group has
developed and shared air-quality resources and learning
opportunities to support meaningful GLOBE student investigations.
GLOBE countries attending the webinar
The most recent learning opportunity was held virtually on 3 April and celebrated student-led air-quality research and fostered cross-border connections between students and scientists.
Over the course of 90 minutes, GLOBE students from across Europe shared their findings with participating scientists and country coordinators, and received thoughtful feedback from air-quality experts.
I’m very impressed by the fantastic students in our region. —Aileen Bright, GLOBE Ireland country coordinator, commenting on the student presentations
Expert Insights Enriched the Webinar
Throughout the session, air-quality professionals provided scientific context and encouraging feedback:
- Eline Verhoeven (RIVM, the Netherlands) introduced the monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂).
- Michal Dávid (Slovakia) discussed particulate matter and its health impacts.
- Aurélie Bornot (France) demonstrated how satellite data can help track air-quality trends.
The experts’ contributions helped students connect their local investigations to wider environmental systems and research.
I was impressed by the GLOBE schools’ work and the great atmosphere during the meeting!. —Aurélie Bornot
Sharing, Learning, and Taking Action
The core of the webinar was student presentations reflecting the theme Share, Learn, & Take Action. Students from Ireland, Malta, Slovakia, and Ukraine showcased investigations into nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), particulate matter, and air-quality monitoring using satellite data.
It’s truly amazing to see GLOBE students so engaged and how they’re involving the whole school community—a perfect example of how GLOBE goes beyond data collection. —Ramona Mercieca, GLOBE Malta deputy coordinator
The event served as both a celebration of student achievement and a powerful demonstration of how international collaboration can inspire learning and spark community-based environmental action.
