Stars and STEM Stories

Wadi Rum, situated in southern Jordan, features a great variety of desert landforms including sandstone valleys, natural arches, gorges, cliffs, landslides and caverns. It was here, at a remote desert campsite, that GLOBE student Mohamad Fayed (of Irbid Jordan of the King Abdullah II School for Excellence), along with three fellow students, Sarah Al-Omari, Rima, and Ihab experienced a memorable encounter with a NASA astronaut.  >>

The GLOBE Regional Coordination Office for the Asia and Pacific region, in association with Indian Environmental Society (IES), and in collaboration with Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA), organized an adventurous seven-day (02-08 October 2018) GLOBE Learning Expedition in Kathmandu and Pokhara, Nepal. The goal of the expedition was to create a platform for culturally diverse partiicpants to engage in a hands-on learning experience centered around understanding the effects of climage change in the region through the use of relevant GLOBE protocols.  >>

For three days in July (20-22) the GLOBE Taiwan Office hosted the 2018 GLOBE Taiwan Science Festival in Taichung, Taiwan. 76 teachers and students from Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines participated in this event.  >>

In July 2018, a group of five Swiss students and their teacher, Andreas Schmid, from Kantonsschule Olten traveled to Killarney, Ireland, for the 2018 GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE) to present their scientific research projects to hundreds of other international students, teachers, and scientists.  >>

In March 2018, GLOBE students at the Lexington School for the Deaf (located in East Elmhurst, New York, USA) began participating in the GLOBE U.S. Air Quality Student Research Campaign. Raising their focus to the sky, the high school students soon became adept at using GLOBE’s atmosphere protocols and Calitoo sun photometers to gather their elevated observations. Along the way, they also discovered their ability – as individuals and as a team – to make significant contributions to science.  >>

GLOBE hydrosphere protocols in hand, and practical purpose at heart, students in Newport News, Virginia, USA, increased their insight into how children in other parts of the world live with, and sometimes without, readily available water.  >>

From January through March 2018, students at the Ibn Rushd Primary School in Qalansuwa, Israel, dug in to examine the impacts of an invasive species, the Acacia Saligna tree, on local native species.  >>

During the GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting, which was held in Israel in November 2017, community members from diverse communities came together to learn, teach, and expand their horizons – and ended up coming away with a sense of community linked by common values.  >>
