South Africa Enhances Classroom Achievement through GLOBE Training
Teachers in South Africa are utilizing the benefits of GLOBE resources in innovative ways to complement their students' education as well as their extracurricular activities. The effort to expand Earth science education throughout the community was recently supported through a GLOBE teacher training workshop held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 19-22 December 2011. Ms. Mokgadi Madiga, Government Point of Contact and acting GLOBE Country Coordinator, stated, "Thanks to the work of these devoted teachers who believe in connecting with the Earth through interactive science study, more schools will connect to GLOBE throughout the coming year and environmental awareness campaigns will have a wider reach in our society."  >>

Lucky Friday the Thirteenth for GLOBE Learners in Cape Town
The GLOBE learners from Indwe Secondary School were pleasantly surprised when they were awarded 13 new bicycles on 13 March 2009. The bicycles were presented by Mr. Kurt Hendricks from the Cape Town Department of Transport and Public Works. The new bike owners were also provided with complete safety kits and were given instruction on safe riding. GLOBE teacher and Atmosphere trainer, Mrs. Rogeline Brettenny, and her GLOBE learners, applied for the award through the Bicycle Empowerment Network's BEN Project.  >>

U.S. Student Research Teams to Attend the 2008 GLE in South Africa
The GLOBE Program Office (GPO) is pleased to announce five winning U.S. teams to attend the GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE) in Cape Town, South Africa. These school teams will meet with scientists and students from around the world to present oral and poster presentations on research related to the 2008 GLE theme, GLOBE Research for Sustainable Communities.  >>

South African School Recognized for Environmental Initiatives
On 30 January 2006 the South African Indwe Secondary School received an Eco-flag in recognition for their efforts towards environmental awareness. The Eco Flag is an award of the Eco-Schools Programme, an international program of the Foundation for Environmental Education, supported in part by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA). This honor is presented to schools worldwide that demonstrate substantial involvement in environmental education activities and initiatives.  >>

A special partnership between GLOBE students in Finland and South Africa is demonstrating both the scientific and educational benefits of the GLOBE Program worldwide. The Groot Brakrivier Secondary School of South Africa initiated their GLOBE Program as an extra-curricular activity with over 150 students and two trained GLOBE teachers.  >>
