GLOBE Conference in Helsinki draws to an end

Students honored by Al Gore for their scientific discoveries

After six days of games, presentations, camping, and communication, GLOBE students, teachers and scientists gathered in Congress Hall, Paasitorni to make their final goodbyes. All students attending the Conference received a certificate signed by U.S. Vice President, Al Gore and also a GLOBE medallion.

The closing ceremony included a presentation by the student reporters and photographers. This group consisted of three reporters and two photographers from Finland and four reporters from the United States.

"This is your environment, GLOBE's for children"

To honor the pioneers of the GLOBE Program, the advisory committee and other members of the program gave a special gift to Heikki Hirvonen, Chairman of the Conference. He was also offered special thanks from Vice President, Al Gore, who initially began the Program.

During this week, students learned a few songs about GLOBE. These songs have brought all countries together, erasing the language boundaries. In the final minutes of the closing ceremony, students, teachers and scientists joined together to sing the GLOBE song one last time here in Finland.
