GLOBE Africa Tree Measurement IoP

Tree Measurement Intensive Observation Period (IOP) September 1-30, 2025GLOBE Africa invites you to take part in the upcoming Tree Measurement Intensive Observation Period (IOP) this September (1-30). This IOP is open to all interested GLOBE regions.

By participating in this IOP, you’ll help Northern Arizona University (NAU) scientists advance their "Engaging Citizen Scientists for Inclusive Earth Systems Monitoring" research, which engages citizen scientists in collecting data on tree height, diameter, and species. These data will provide ground validation to improve NASA’s Earth Systems Monitoring GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation) L4a biomass product. Learn more in these upcoming webinars:

  • Session 1 (20 August, 2025, 17:00-18:00 UTC): In this introductory webinar, Jenna Keany from Northern Arizona University (NAU) will share how you can engage in the IOP and contribute to cutting-edge scientific research by collecting tree data with the GLOBE Observer App. Learn more.
  • Session 2 (25 August 25, 2025, 17:00-18:00 UTC): In this session, Jenna Keany from Northern Arizona University (NAU) and Brian Campbell, the GLOBE Observer Trees Science Lead, will guide you step-by-step through the app’s features, showing you how to collect and submit data for the IOP to support NAU’s “Engaging Citizen Scientists for Inclusive Earth Systems Monitoring” research.
