Jennifer Bourgeault is the US Country Coordinator for the GLOBE Program (April 2013-present) and Coordinator of North Country Education Services NH GLOBE Partnership (2005). She has been with GLOBE since 1997 when she was recruited as a science classroom teacher to become part of the GLOBE Land Cover/Biology Team at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). Using her classroom experience, she edited the materials in the Land Cover/Biology chapter to make them more accessible to teachers, conducted teacher and trainer workshops, directly supported teachers in collecting land cover data and assisted the team in conducting research using the data collected. She sent a GLOBE Land Cover/Biology e-newsletter to subscribers that the team interacted with and trained, including teachers, trainers and Partners. After 9 years, the listserv had over 150 subscribers.
Jen joined NHEET in 2002, a group of NH science education professionals coordinating other national science and education programs. This team was created to leverage the environmental (education and sciences) programs and personnel in the state to compete for larger and more effective grants, offer longer and more in-depth workshops, connect to the other national programs beyond the state level and complete ambitious projects. The group consists of the coordinators and key personnel of the NCES NH GLOBE Partnership, NH Project Learning Tree, Project WET through the NH Department of Environmental Services, the USDA Forest Service Conservation Education Division, UNH Cooperative Extension Forest Stewardship Program and the NH Fish and Game Education Department (Projects WILD and HOME specifically). One of the most ambitious projects of this group is the Scope and Sequence for Building Vertical Science Literacy. This is used by schools and districts across the state as a model when writing K-12 science curriculum. The document is now receiving additional attention as a resource in the discussion surrounding implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards.
In 2005, Jen moved the NH GLOBE Partnership to North Country Education Services, a technology learning center in northern NH to continue GLOBE on a part-time basis. By expanding the funding for the Partnership beyond the Land Cover/Biology area, training and mentoring could now include the GLOBE Program protocols and learning activities for atmosphere, soil, hydrology, carbon cycle, GPS, and phenology. In 2008, two NH GLOBE teachers, Carolyn Hemingway and Teresa Minogue, were awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching for Science in NH. Ms. Minogue was recognized nationally as well. Both teachers used their GLOBE work in their nomination packets.
Jen continues to provide science professional development for informal and formal educators; including individual K-12 teachers, schools and districts. This work is primarily funded through state MSP funds awarded to NHEET. In addition to GLOBE, her other areas of expertise include inquiry, field investigations, and science notebooks and she has facilitated discussions and work-groups of schools engaged in vertical alignment of the science curriculum. In order to do this effectively, she is trained in the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) and in the creation of Innovation Configuration (IC) maps for the science classroom.
Jen is a Master Trainer of Land Cover/Biology and a trainer for the other protocol areas, including how to use GLOBE data and resources and Elementary GLOBE (K-4 storybooks and activities). She worked with the GLOBE Carbon Cycle Team to assist with curriculum development and the training of these new materials. In 2012, she chaired the Land Cover/Biology working group for the GLOBE Science Refresh report for NSF, soliciting and summarizing feedback on the topic area through teleconferences and email from the group, as well as outside experts. That same year, she was also the Lead Land Cover/Biology facilitator for a Master Trainer workshop and charged with planning and facilitation of a working group there to review land cover protocols and the continuing update of training materials..
