Elementary GLOBE Storybook on Aerosols Now Available
Elementary GLOBE storybook on Aerosols, "What's Up in the Atmosphere? Exploring Colors in the Sky" is available on globe.gov! The development of this book was led by Jessica Taylor, from NASA's CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation) Mission, and Kristyn Damadeo, from SAGE III/ISS (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment/International Space Station) from NASA Langley – two missions that study aerosols.
The book was created by Becca Hathaway, Kerry Zarlengo, and Dr. Lisa Gardiner, from the UCAR Center for Science Education, a GLOBE Program partner. "We felt that this storybook would be really important for teachers at schools that were opting out of teaching science as a way to easily incorporate science through reading," Jessica Taylor said.
Throughout the storybook, the GLOBE kids want to know why the sky isn't always blue, and they work with their teacher to learn about the atmosphere and how it can affect the color of the sky.
The storybook is part of the Elementary GLOBE resources for GLOBE teachers. Elementary GLOBE is designed to introduce K-4 students to the study of Earth System Science. The complete instructional unit includes:
- Science-based storybooks designed to introduce students to key concepts in water, soil, clouds, seasons, aerosols, and Earth system studies.
- Classroom learning activities complementing the science content covered in each storybook that are designed to further engage students in GLOBE's five investigation areas (atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, and Earth as a system).
