GLOBE Training through Eco-Schools USA
Eco-Schools is an internationally acclaimed program that strives to model environmentally sound practices, provide support for greening the curriculum and enhance science and academic achievement. Additionally, it works to foster a greater sense of environmental stewardship and provides a framework to help educators integrate sustainability principles throughout their schools and curriculum. Currently, there are over 59 countries around the world participating in the program.
Eco-Schools USA, the U.S. branch of this international organization, is currently offering a free online course opportunity for any US teacher who plans to take part in the Eco-Schools USA program with students in grades K-12 and who wants to become GLOBE-trained. The opportunity is presented by Eco-Schools, GLOBE, Youth Learning As Citizen Environmental Scientists (YLACES), and SciStarter through the National Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife University online learning platform.
Teachers will learn how to engage their students in Green STEM through GLOBE protocols. The GLOBE – Eco-Schools partnership is providing students the opportunity to address sustainability issues through service learning, through GLOBE.
The course is self-paced, but must be completed during the time frame shown here.
Dates: 13 April – 18 May 2016
How to Register: Register on Wildlife University.
Expectation: The course is open to 80 U.S. teachers. The first forty who successfully complete the course will receive science equipment necessary for students to conduct the GLOBE Protocols. This outstanding opportunity comes YLACES. In exchange for the free equipment, students in grades 5-12 are expected to enter a minimum of 10 Soil Moisture Active Passive, SMAP measurements and 4 weeks of precipitation data or for teachers of students in grades K-4, 4 weeks of surface temperature and precipitation data.
