Training Options

There are four options for preparing GLOBE members to contribute data to the GLOBE database. To guarantee a high quality of data, GLOBE members must be trained via one of these options for EACH protocol for which you intend to upload data.

Training options include (1) reviewing the field guide, (2) completing a Data Collection eTraining in Mighty Networks, (3) completing the Protocol eTraining and assessment test, or (4) completing a workshop on that protocol. Choose the option that best fits your learning style and goals. See table below.

Review the Field Guides and Site Definition Guides

Read through the protocol’s Field Guide to be sure you understand the process for collecting data and inputting the data. If you are confused by a step, we recommend completing the Data Collection eTraining (if available) or Protocol eTraining and self assessment. Read below to determine which eTraining option is the best fit for your needs.

Data Collection eTraining

Data Collection eTrainings focus on the information you need to collect quality data and to enter those data into the GLOBE database. These eTrainings are available on the GLOBE Network learning platform. You must create an account if you do not have one already. We recommend you use the same login credentials you use for GLOBE, so you need to remember only one set to access GLOBE materials. Currently, Data Collection eTrainings are available on a web browser, and a specific GLOBE Network app will be released in the near future.

Data Collection eTrainings are available for Air Temperature, Precipitation - Rainfall, Relative Humidity, Surface Temperature, Biometry - Canopy Cover and Ground Cover, Biometry - Graminoid Biomass, Biometry - Graminoid, Tree, and Shrub Height, Biometry - Tree Circumference, Water pH - Using pH Meter, Water pH - Using pH Paper, Water Temperature - Using a Temperature Probe, Water Temperature - Using an Alcohol-Filled Thermometer, Water Transparency - Using a Secchi Disk, Water Transparency - Using a Transparency Tube, Soil Moisture (Gravimetric), and Soil Temperature.

You will receive a badge in the GLOBE Network learning platform for completing your Data Collection eTraining.

Protocol eTraining and Protocol Assessment Test

The Protocol eTrainings and assessment tests are the original, in-depth GLOBE training materials. They include background science information and pedagogical tips. The eTrainings are available as downloadable PowerPoints on the Pedosphere (Soil), Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Atmosphere eTraining pages or as accessible downloadable PDFs. Please review the eTrainings and then take the assessment test before entering data into the GLOBE database.

Once the assessment test is completed, proof of that training will appear in your globe.gov account settings under GLOBE Trainings.

In-person or Virtual GLOBE Workshop

Trained GLOBE members occasionally offer in-person or virtual workshops. See if there is a training local to you that you can join.
