Patchara Pongmanawut , a GLOBE teacher at the Princess Chulabhorn Science High School in the Trang Province in Thailand, has been doing fantastic work with her students. These students have been at the top of the Mosquito Habitat Mapper Honor Roll for the past month, and show no sign of slowing down!
"In Thailand, there are many mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, malaria, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile fever, St. Louis encephalitis, filariasis and Zika", Pongmanawut says. This has really inspired her and her students to go ...

This month, the GLOBE Mission Mosquito team is shining our " Spotlight " on the work that Diouf Birane and his students are doing in Senegal.
Birane Diouf and his students at the Lycee Seydina Limamoulaye are proud members of GLOBE’s “ Zika Education and Prevention Project .” In some areas in West Africa, certain insects carry and spread diseases like African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), chikungunya, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, dengue fever, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, onchocerciasis, Rift Valley fever, West Nile virus, ...

It is the middle of winter here in Maryland, and it is cold! We had a lot of snow last week, and are expecting more precipitation later this week. Even though I know we have no active mosquitoes outside, I am still using the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper. If you are also living somewhere where mosquitoes aren't currently active, we hope you will consider collecting data as well, so you will be prepared when active mosquito season arrives.
Wondering what kind of data you can collect when there are no active mosquitoes? Great ...

The 2019 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium important dates and rubrics are now available! The GLOBE Clouds team at NASA Langley Research Center would love to see you use cloud observations in your research!
Do you need some ideas? Here are a few. Also, don't forget about the blog on how to come up with a good research question .
K-2nd grade:
- What is the cloud type observed the most during Fall/Spring/Summer (choose one or a different period of time)?
- Which cloud type, nimbostratus or cumulonimbus, produces the most ...

Whenever you submit a cloud observations, the GLOBE Clouds team at NASA Langley Research Center looks for satellites that were over your area at about the same time. The team then gathers the information from these satellites and compares them to your own observations. The result is a satellite match table that you receive through an email!
The table allows you to compare what you saw and what the satellite noted. You also have the actual satellite image at the bottom of the table! A new "How to Read a Satellite Match" page is available for you to learn ...

Clouds are amazing to observe and always seem to capture the attention of all, from little ones to the young at heart. The GLOBE Clouds team would like to help all of those that would be interested in doing research with clouds. A good research question is always tricky so here are some tips and ideas to get you started!
What is a good research question?
It is not always easy to come up with a research question, but GLOBE has a good checklist to help you out! You can even assign points and see how many points does your question total as a good research question. A ...

In GLOBE, there are two major perspectives on the global environment – the spheres and the Earth system. The Teacher’s Guide and the new sphere pages build on the approach that examines Earth as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere. The study of Earth System Science focuses on the cycles that connect the spheres – the Energy, Water, and Biogeochemical.
The Honor Roll provides recognition of those who report in depth in one area or another. There are three honor rolls recognizing Atmosphere measurement reporting; one for Hydrosphere;, and two each for Biosphere and ...

I just updated HoloGLOBE to v1.0.2. For those of you new to this app, HoloGLOBE brings NASA and NOAA visualizations of the Earth to the palm of your hand through augmented reality (AR). You can read more about the app here: http://www.palmyracove.org/InstituteforEarthObservations/HoloGLOBE.aspx
In this latest release, I have added play/pause functionality to the MyNASAData module. The MyNASAData is essentially an augmented reality version of GLOBE's Earth System Poster. In addition the new ICESat-2 module has been added. The ICESat-2 module was built by Emme Wiederhold, a ...

I've been working with a fantastic group from New Hampshire to provide professional development for educators for years. This year, we've spent a considerable amount of time on the pedosphere, from wetland soils to forest and grassland soils. We've talked about why trees go where they do and all the critters, both macro and micro, that spend time in soil. I've listed some of my favorite resources below but please add your own and let's grow the list:
NRCS posters, guides, lesson plans and games

I am hearing more and more conversations center around "bundling," particularly when it comes to NGSS ( Next Generation Science Standards ). Sometimes, in my GLOBE world, it is a conversation around bundling the protocols together. I know that some teachers already do this when they take students outside for field investigations. In my email clean-out, I found this little gem that I thought I'd share.
In 2012, the GLOBE Annual Meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota included two investigation questions for fieldwork. To answer the questions, the participants used several protocols to collect ...

I've been digging through my Inbox, trying to clear out some of the large files from the past. I'm at a critical point as these files are triggering invitations to buy more space for storage. Rather than doing that, I'm deleting instead!
But during this process, I've come across some resources and discussions that I always seem to forget exist already on the GLOBE website. I thought that perhaps I'd write a couple blog posts and point out some of these for anyone following my blog.
This first one is a training agenda from 2003! A group of us were invited to Washington, D.C. to work ...

We had a fabulous webinar this afternoon in which students in both North America and South America shared their work on using GLOBE protocols to learn more about water in their environment. Meriam Kalloe, the GLOBE Assistant Country Coordinator for Suriname, brought together many students from Anton Resida Middle School who shared information on their use of several GLOBE hydrology protocols to study the quality of water in three locations near their school. They plan to continue to monitor the quality of the water in those three sites. Then Jeff Bouwman's middle school students ...

Greetings from Grosse Ile, Michigan (United States of America)! Recently, I had the honor of being published in the National Science Teachers Association's (NSTA) April/May 2018 edition of Science and Children with my good friend, Dr. Stein Brunvand (Associate Dean - University of Michigan - Dearborn - College of Education, Health, and Human Services ). Dr. Brunvand and I shared some ideas for introducing Citizen Science and technology in an elementary classroom setting. Many of these best practices were utilized when I was a fifth grade teacher at Frank E. Weiss Elementary ...

Eight-grade students from Our Lady of Mount Carmel School have been very active during our GLOBE 2017-18 U.S. Air Quality Student Research Campaign. In fact, they recently submitted their team projects to the GLOBE 2018 International Virtual Science Symposium. All students have done remarkable work and one of the most important skills they have developed is collaboration. Among these students, one of them stood out for becoming a Calitoo expert user and for helping not only the members of her own team, but also the members of all other teams, with her accurate AOT measurements.
